I'm often asked for good things to read or watch about the war on terror. With the sad 25th anniversary of 9/11 approaching, I have some suggestions.

Understanding 9/11 and its Consequences

In a previous (professional) life, I was not a history professor. I was a newspaper reporter. But as a single guy in his mid-20s, I felt the itch to try something different. So, I started a job in public relations in New York City. On Sept. 5, 2001. At the end of my first week on the job, I went to visit a friend in the East Village.

First Time, Long Time

Somewhere in Westerville, Ohio, lies a VHS cassette. Probably buried now in a suburban backyard underneath the soil of a well-manicured lawn. The tape contained the last time – before Saturday night – the New York Knicks played in a game that could win them an NBA championship. Wanting to preserve history (guess I was preparing for my future career even then), I recorded the game in anticipation of watching and re-watching the crowning moment for my favorite team, which hadn’t won a title in my lifetime.
