When Ricky Davis is awoken by texts asking “Is this you?” about a photo of his best friend and Kingsden Football Club teammate Zhan Zao getting intimate with a man that looks a lot like Ricky, he’s thrown into an impossible situation.

Ricky is straight—and after years of scandals, quite publicly so—but when Ricky overhears that the owners of the club plan to trade Zhan for being gay, he knows what he has to do: lie that he’s the other man in the photo.

Zhan is the best striker on the team and Kingsden needs him to secure the trophy that Ricky’s been chasing his entire career. Surely the club can’t trade two openly queer players?

“I didn’t give it much thought, but I reckon it sounds better than got smashed and smashed outside the toilets at Vegas.”

Zhan looks at him and, shit, maybe Ricky sat too close.

“And the team. Did you think of what the team would say?”

“I’m the vice-captain.”

“Yes, and next year when Jordan retires you’ll be captain. Skipper or not, locker rooms have fallen apart for less, I’m sure.”

“Ours won’t.” Ricky is sure of it.

Ricky hears the news from Sofía.

It’s early when her text wakes him—much earlier than he’d ever dare set an alarm. 5:38 his phone reads, numbers blinking in time with Ricky’s eyelids as he takes them in.

Ricky, vice captain and centre midfielder of Kingsden Football Club, could really use the sleep. It’s a rare weekend where Kingsden doesn’t play until Monday night and he’s hungover from the alcohol he drank only hours ago, before he’d lost his friends in the nightclub.

Sofía usually texts in demands and, if not, she texts in long winding paragraphs that keep Ricky’s eyes on his phone for long enough that he misses his tube stop. As his friend-slash-agent, it’s not out of the ordinary to receive texts from her in the morning. She’s one of five people on the shortlist Ricky allows to disturb the sleep function on his phone.

She can also just as easily let herself into his bedroom, only a floor apart in the brownstone they share.

This time, her text is little more than a link.

Which is weird because if she sends a link at all, she usually includes her critique, or, if it’s an article from The False 9, her blithe commentary to go along with it. He had laughed himself to tears reading her last texts about Camden Football Club’s decline. There’s a lot to laugh about while Kingsden is sitting pretty in the top 4, halfway into the season and just after the start of the new year.

The linked message shows a small preview picture too dark to make out. The caption, however, reads “What happens in Vegas… [NSFW]”.
