The one thing I adore about this space is how multi-lingual my feed is. Far from an echo chamber, I'm picking up bits of Greek, French, German and even small bits of American. The discourse here feels truly international as opposed to that other place that felt entirely monotone.
You can/should read Emily Wilson's latest take on the Odyssey, but I'm logging on to convey my hairdresser's reaction. She was AGHAST that Nolan, with his million $ budget, gave Matt Damon ONLY 6 hair extensions. As a result, his hair did not blow around properly, & that ruined the film for her.
Politicians will always find a way to make discourse about themselves. Their safety. Their struggles. Their pay. Their ambition. That social media makes this seem more obvious is part of the discourse problem.
And I think MPs getting frustrated with the discourse on social media is a direct result of the decade of social media gaslighting the British people have endured. Being *told* what we think, rather than asked. Deliberate mistruth and spin -- from all parties.
"She partly attributes the situation to social media and is calling for political debate to focus on policy rather than personalities." The same social media she herself has used to platform some very divisive policies for the last two years.

Adrian Giddings@cunabula.bsky.social · 2d agoI think the problem is that we bought into the idea of platforms, rather than individual nodes on a... web, with links. Not ignoring the barriers to entry/actual effort, those are totally real, but not insurmountable. If only we'd made those things easier and cheaper instead of [waves hands around].
Also, this is listed under "comment" but the writer has an Indy author profile and the piece is being pushed like an article on social media. That's not normal is it?

@andydiggle.bsky.social I'm not sure how many people would be interested this, but recently I started cooking belter recipes (as best as I can from the descriptions in the books) just to see... And they really aren't bad at all.
And here's the thing. The right always shout about being excluded from things. And so liberals, being liberal, let them in, try to be friendly. And then the right barge in, take a shit on the desk, destroy everything that was good and still complain about it as they leave.
90% of my time here is looking at art. Photography. Books. Music. But I guess that *is* liberal. As opposed to reading dry, grinding hate and muck-spreading bullshit like a Brexit obsessed farmer.

But it already is, we talk about lots of things here. If it has a reputation as the liberal bubble app, maybe that's because disgruntled rightists are always complaining about it?

Speaking ill of absolute monsters is a moral obligation, actually.
Back when I had Twitter I used to offer free headshots for low-income authors, not sure I have much reach here but the offer is still there. London or Birmingham (although I’m in Glasgow and Edinburgh at the end of Aug and can fit in a session. Will have lights so can be indoors).
Classic Transpennine Trains. The person I'm with is disabled and had booked a seat. Someone else was sat in that seat. I asked a staff member to help and they just walked off the train without doing anything. "But someone is in *our* seat"
Spoke to a guy I know. Probably one of the best visuals designers I've ever encountered. He's packing it in because AI is making his business unsustainable. Not just him though but his staff. And what do we get, as a society? Rubbish posters.
Good grief, Google is now an awful experience. First thing presented is an AI answer that I've found frequently bollocks. Next up, endless Reddit posts I can't see without getting a Reddit app. This is how they destroyed the internet.
