As the VP of Marketing for my company, I spend a lot of time thinking about how we'll stay competitive as the industry pivots to AI search and snippets. And here's the thing: the reason that these AI companies are willing to spend millions on rare books is because original writing is SO valuable.

My mother, who I doubt could name a single WNBA player before 2026, now has a feed that is wall-to-wall condemnation of the WNBA for its hateful rhetoric towards women and white people. And it sucks, but it's also a good reminder to never fall prey to the manufactured outrage that is all around us.

DEAD HEAT (1988): It's a very silly premise, done with extreme silliness, for about an hour or so. THEN, suddenly, director Mark Goldblatt decides he's going to channel the spirit of frequent collaborator James Cameron, and the whole thing kicks into this wildly stylized extra gear. What a picture.

Zombie Treat Williams - dressed not unlike Bill Paxton in NEAR DARK - and zombie Joe Piscopo both point uzis at someone off-camera in this still from the movie DEAD HEAT.

"Assante’s smooth-talking horndog is closer to my ideal Odysseus than Damon’s neutered mope." @theamynicholson.bsky.social shares a million great points - about THE ODYSSEY, about adaptation, about audiences and culture - but I'm pretty sure this line is what I'll remember. Hell yeah.

Yes, Emily Wilson, Odysseus has been changed for the movie. Deal with it

Critical swords are clashing, but there's a way to cut through the debate and really talk about how we review art.

It's a pretty neat trick: buy news companies, enact a bunch of policies that erode public trust in journalism, then point to eroded public trust in journalism as evidence that you need to buy more news companies.

Caught two screenings in theaters back-to-back today: SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY and HADESTOWN: THE MUSICAL. And I cried during both of them, because this is who I am now, I'm someone who cries during movies, it's what I do.

SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY (2026): It’s probably not a coincidence that the two best MCU movies of the 2020s feature a showdown between characters and their memories. Holland puts in some serious effort here; lowkey might be the best work of his career.

SOULM8TE (2026): I know that Kate Dolan has talked a lot about this being an homage to ‘90s erotic thrillers, but it really, really is — straight down to the giant warehouse apartment à la FATAL ATTRACTION. And I think that’ll give this real legs (pun intended) with a certain flavor of genre fan.

what happened to jason is pretty common. chi ossé has introduced a bill to the city council that would create a “Freelancers Payment Fund” that would pay freelancers immediately, then recover the funds from the delinquent hiring parties. council.nyc.gov/chi-osse/202...

Well, it’s invoicing day, and since they’re really apparently not going to pay me for something I wrote for them two months ago, I guess today is the day to post about how @vulture.com fucks over its film freelancers. Long (sorry) thread, with receipts:

IMPACT: that company that was offering to buy books for AI companies’ training data — and probably destroy them in the process — says it will no longer offer this service following 404 Media’s exposure of it www.404media.co/ai-company-t...

Company Offering Printed Books to Train AI Stops After 404 Media Coverage

Citing backlash, ISBNdb removed its webpages about training AI, denied ever buying, scanning, or selling a book for AI training, and said the site was a "test of market interest."
