To be blunt this article is quite bad, it relies on the astrocyte neuon lactate shuttle which is not true and a bunch of handwaving about metabolic flexibility when the truth remains that glucose is the obligate fuel for neuronal activation however www.thetransmitter.org/metabolism/b...

Beyond glucose: The brain may feed itself

Myelin may serve as an energy reserve for the brain, and neuroscientists are rethinking how the brain stores, shares and protects energy.

This is the basic polyvagal theory eye exercise. It's easy to do & can be done anywhere, tho is most effective when laying down on your back. It shifts vagal tone in powerful ways, relieving anxiety, anger, stress, PTSD, & dysautonomia symptoms It's not a cure. It's a coping tool to manage burnout

1st step isn't part of the technique but for checking it
works. Gently turn your head left to right several times. Be gentle –with no stretch, strain, or pain. Notice any tension in the neck, any tightness. Check in with your breathing, notice any ease or constricts. Notice any thoughts.

Interlock your fingers and bring them behind your head to support it. They should be just above your neck. If this gets uncomfortable, rest one hand at a time. It is easier to do this when lying down.

Keeping head facing forward, look across right with your eyes & hold in that direction. You can blink. If it feels uncomfortable to have the eyes open then close them & keep looking to the right.

After a brief time you will notice a shift in your breathing – a yawn,
swallow, sigh, louder breath, or deeper breath.

Repeat to the left.
Repeat step 1 to notice any changes.
Repeat all steps if further vagal shift is needed.

Macrophages in the liver as sensors for the earth magnetic field with signals sent to the brain via the vagal nerve 😮 I'm struggling to understand how this would actually work as a compass signal but it would be very cool. Also, this pigeon portrait makes for an adorable cover! 🕊️

Researchers have identified superparamagnetic macrophages in the livers of rock pigeons to be crucial for magnetic sensing. The finding uncovers an unexpected role for immune cells in sensory perception and may fundamentally change our understanding of animal navigation. https://scim.ag/4nTQ3nq

How animals sense Earth’s magnetic field is one of biology’s enduring mysteries. Researchers have now identified superparamagnetic macrophages in the livers of rock pigeons (Columba livia) to be crucial for magnetic sensing. The finding uncovers an unexpected role for immune cells in sensory perception and may fundamentally change our understanding of animal navigation.
