Toad Dies 5 Is Here To Thrive! (Five Named Clive. This is a reference to a Diary Of A Wimpy Kid panel.) Despite its flaws, Toad Dies 5 is one I’ve become rather fond of over the course of uploading it. It’s very simple, but I think that aids it in its charm rather than mitigate it… ala Toad Dies 2.

Happy #makeaterriblecomicday, everyone! Looks like my artistry will be the cure to what ails ya! Or should I say… what SNAILS ya? Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha! It’s funny because I added two letters to the beginning of ”ails” which forms a word noticeably kinda sorta mostly related to the comic at hand. Neat!

Panel 1: “Isn’t it funny? Well, not “funny, per se, but interesting. The circumstances of where we are. That so much hate can exist in the world, but we can CHOOSE to be kind. To smile. To say “hey’, and make someone’s day brighter.”

Panel 2: “I exist. My colors go outside the lines, and my lines themself are imperfect. But I can still feel. Make others feel. Without perfection. And what does perfection mean, if there is so much beauty in imperfection? To diverge from a given path, when done for yourself rather than the sake of it, is a wonderful thing. Why be normal when to be weird is so… unique. Different. Special. [Special is underlined.] Does my design make sense? Not especially. I’m an orange amalgamation with an “M” for an eye and a stem before my head. But I am not incomprehensible. I can be recognized, no matter how bizarre. And I find that wonderful.”

Panel 3: “For even an amateurish silhouette to convey my being, I must be doing SOMETHING right. Or… maybe something wrong. After all, if everything were combinations and permutations of perfect shapes, art would stand out all the less, wouldn’t it? Or at least be less freeing. But what is freedom, really? Is it the ability to choose your own choices? In a sense, yes. But I think there’s more to it than that. If you “make your own choices”, but are bound to the structure of your self-defined framework, would that not be true freedom? Maybe nothing matters. But if nothing matters, we can choose to do what makes us happy. Engage with those who make us happy. Friends, and family, and loved ones… and everyone else we love and care about. Appreciating those around you, and yourself, is freedom in my eyes. Saccharine? Perhaps. But if to love is to be trapped, then I don’t want to be free.”

Update for my #emmytherobot #vn / #visualnovel on #scratch! Emmy’s got a redesign, everyone! Not necessarily to be more comic-accurate, though that did factor in, but to look more… clean. Polished. Like a nandroid would be! Took a, uh… around year-long break. Whoops. Hopefully you all haven’t gone.

The new Emmy design is on the left, looking more polished than the old one. Her hair is symmetrical (apart from the left tuft being in front of the right tuft; from our perspective at least) and her buttons have a slight lilt to the right to signify the direction she’s facing. Her face has more of a curve at the bottom, and her dress looks more neat. I’m just now realizing the perspective is off because why would her face and top-half of her outfit look as though it’s facing us when every other part of her body looks as if it’s facing right… but, I digress. Even the crown looks cleaner, not fully even but no longer having any jagged edges and at the very least being more even than it was before.

To the right, we have a shocked Molly, one hand on her hip and staring at this new Emmy design with obvious shock. They’re both in front of the yellow background that has seemed to become a trademark for this visual novel.

Molly now looks annoyed, her eyelids down and her eyebrows furrowed as she holds her hands out in protest and asks (in a red text box that befits her, of course), rather presumptuously, “Where’s MY redesign?” Emmy’s smile has fallen into a neutral expression at this as she looks at Molly wordlessly.

A spot the difference of sorts! The Emmy from… more than a year ago now, wow, is on the left, and the new redesign of Emmy, from… almost a year ago (I procrastinated HARD on posting this) is on the right. Both are in their default smile, but their mouths are open because that was the only sprite I had left-over from the Emmy “pre-design” in the project W.I.P itself and I really didn’t want to scour through previous releases just to find one where her mouth was closed. I had to make a temporary new sprite just to show off the pre-design separately from the “new” Emmy, Somewhat obviously, this scenario will be impossible to find in the real game (or any demo scenarios), more impossible than the other mock-ups due to the fact I am probably not going to arrange this all again.

With a side-by-side comparison, some more changes can be sensed. Most notably, the redesign has: more rounded edges of Emmy’s uniform tufts, a smaller and straighter nose, and more ovular cheek-plates that don’t fully curve at the bottom, almost like a quarter-circle of sorts.

Emmy is looking at Amy, looking… very odd. The eyelids of her left eye (our left; her right) are moderately narrowed, while the eyelids of her right eye (our right; her left) are even more narrowed. Her mouth is small, to signify shock, with her eyebrows raised. Most notably, however, she can be seen with a very visible eye-shine; something that makes the eyes pop a bit more, in my opinion.

Amy is opposite Emmy, on the right (our right, her… well, she probably wouldn’t give a straight answer if you asked her which direction she was anyway), delighted and with her own eyebrows raised in joy instead of shock. Her bottom-eyelids are raised to further accentuate her happiness, and she’s speaking, an open smile with her top teeth visible.

Her text box reads, with text smaller than it usually is (and as such, it blends into the background a little bit more): “Wow Emmy it is so cool that your redesign has a toggle to give you an eye-shine and also your pupils face the direction your eyes are”

After this, the text continued under the textbox, partially cut off: “and also that your eyelids have been given a bunch of new costumes”

The text coalesces in the bottom-right corner in the screen, each individual level stacking on top of each other to create a smear of black pixels and jagged lines. Even though it’s not legible in the image whatsoever, what I wrote, for the sake of posterity and preservation, was: “and also that we can change the size of our text and also that all your emotions haven’t been fully redesigned yet and also that Monkeyman took almost a year long break from working on this project and also”

(I purposefully ended the text on an “and also” for the sake of comedy, don’t worry, there isn’t anything extra I forgot to add/am purposefully omitting. There is also no commas nor other typical grammatical touches in Amy’s dialogue, also for the sake of comedy. I feel as though out of all the Nandroids, she would be the one to use run-on sentences.)

🎨 Artists! Show what built your style! 🎨 A lot I didn’t include here, like Mario (3D World specifically; love Mario!), Invader Zim, Gumball, and Wander (which didn’t “build” it but influenced it later), Tom and Jerry (cartoony faces and body contortion??), and more! More info on each in alt text!!

Phineas and Ferb (Seasons 1-4, to be specific; they’re the ones that influenced me and also I just don’t like Season 5 LOL) is like… probably the biggest influence to me. As an artist and a person. Like, I would obviously have SOME wordplay juice in me without it, because I would still have Undertale to fall back on. But I don’t know if I’d be as optimistic or upbeat. Or as into music, really! I’m listening to a Phineas and Ferb song as I write this, in fact!! “My Undead Mummy And Me”. It’s neat. And also features the word “conniption”. So, as you can see, it’s very much influenced my vocabulary.

Liiiike… they had a gag in one of the episodes (the one where Buford’s DNA brings a bunch of potatoes to life? “Lotsa Latkes”, I believe?) where Phineas and Ferb just have a list of incredibly long words that start with S, like “sesquipedalian” and “septuagenarian”? And it’s just… it’s me. It’s my essence. Phineas and Ferb is my essence. The title characters’ rampant creativity, Candace’s neuroticism, Perry and Doofenshmirtz’s wacky battles… it’s very… VERY me.

I love it!! I LOVE IT!!!!!

The side effect this has also led to is that when all kinds of rumors are flying around about a person, that person admitting to/apologizing for ANY of them is immediately taken as evidence that ALL of them are true. One of the things that bothers me about the TADC situation is the lesson this kinda stuff teaches. The lesson I was always taught as a kid was, "if you do something wrong, you should say you're sorry and then try to do better." I think that's a pretty reasonable approach.
