Two wolves of ash are forged in flame and birth.

One carries light the hungry dark would take,
One feeds the shadow, answers to its call.
One stands among the Moonheld, heart awake,
One smiles in silence watching kingdoms fall.

The fragments scatter, ancient bloodlines stir,
The long forgotten silence finds its end.
The world will turn on what two siblings were.

Wolf Anatomy

The wolves of Lycara are physically wolves.
They are four-legged, furred, built along the lines of their ancestors.

They have not become bipedal.
They have not developed hands. However, the digits of their forepaws are more flexible, which helps them grip.

What has changed over thousands of years of evolving intelligence, shaped by ancestry and moonstone magic, is subtle but far more significant than any physical redesign.

They look like wolves. They move like wolves.
They are faster than any Maker, more physically powerful, built for terrain and weather and the particular demands of a world that is largely wild.

No wolf can ever truly walk or stand on two legs.
When they need to use their forepaws for writing or tasks, they are sitting or laying.
Otherwise, they lean upright only briefly, returning immediately to a four-paw stance.

The Age System

Wolves in this world age to adulthood at approximately eight years old, but can live up to ninety-five.

They develop faster than the Makers did but live long enough that their relationships, histories, and wounds accumulate over a span comparable to a human life.

Ages three through seven is equivalent to a human teenager — past puppyhood, not yet adult. Old enough to be taken seriously. Young enough that being taken seriously feels like a surprise.

The Pack Territories

Lycara contains six distinct geographic regions, each shaped by the moonstone deposits beneath them and the pack culture that developed above them:

Crimson Cliffs — Volcanic red stone ridges in the northwest, warm year-round from geothermal activity, home to the Blood Moon Pack. The moonstone deposits here run in veins through the cliff face, visible as threads of pale light in the red stone.

Shadow Hollows — Deep forest and ancient ruins in the northeast, where the light comes in at angles that make shadows longer than they should be, home to the Eclipse Pack. The Maker ruins here are the oldest in Lycara and the least understood.

Whispering Plains — Vast open grassland in the southwest where the wind never entirely stops, home to the New Moon Pack. The deposits here are shallow and scattered, creating a faint luminescence across the plains on moonlit nights.

Silver River Valley — A territory of reflecting water and luminous forest in the southeast, home to the Full Moon Pack. The moonstone deposits run along the riverbed, making the water faintly luminescent after dark.

Duskfall — Forested midlands sitting between the four great territories, home to the Duskfall Pack. Small, quiet, and in possession of the largest archive in Lycara.

The Hollowfen Routes — Not a fixed territory but a network of seasonal paths through all of the above, followed by the Hollowfen Wanderers across generations.

Lycara

Lycara is a continent shaped like the head of a howling wolf.
This is considered either a coincidence or a sign, depending on which pack you ask.

The continent is dominated by five major pack territories arranged around a central sacred site:

The Moonstone Grove
The Grove is the largest surface deposit of moonstones in Lycara, where the magic is oldest and strongest and most visible.

No pack controls it. Every pack wants to.
This has been the source of every major conflict in recorded history.

The world is old, but the civilization built on it is relatively new.

What came before — the Makers, their wars, their weapons, their extinction — exists in ruins, fragments and the oral histories of the Hollowfen Wanderers, who remember things no archive was ever built to hold.
