I have had one of the fullest days of all time. All because I woke up at around 6am after struggling to get to sleep at maybe 2. This means two things.

1. Ouch to my body.
2. Plenty of time to play a Kirby game.

And so, earlier today, I started playing Kirby Super Star Ultra when I couldn’t bear to focus on anything else, and immediately realised: this game is incredible. This game is everything. Thank you, Kirby.

"I had heard about this book, a self-contained, introspective WOMAN novel quite a bit, but I had no idea what I was in for.

It’s a story about a group of women trapped in a cage, and our protagonist, who is the youngest among them, has never known a man. Only the cage. How intriguing.

Much of the novel is, in its own strange way, less interested in these basic facts about its premise, and more interested in this woman’s sense of alienation in a world where she is basically unique. Elements of her personality express a sort of heightened oddness, and eventually the novel is less about men and the lack of them, and more about absence and lack of connection and never really figuring it out.

It is a devastating, gorgeous, weird little book. I loved it."

"I decided, after making a video for my Patreon about a particularly special and interesting adaptation, to start watching as many Wuthering Heightses as possible. The first one is this, one of the most recent, and notably one with a black Heathcliff - he is explicitly a former slave in this version, which adds its own searing severity to the equation.

I like its stark view of poverty and the wilderness - the film has this pointed, sensorial eye that laser-focuses in on Heathcliff and Cathy’s experiences of lush pleasure and gloopy, stinging pain. Dogs are constantly barking, and there is, in that detail, a perfect sense of madness.

There is a great sense of unravelling here, the childishness of it all. The bitter, desperate growling of kicked dogs. That feral essence of the novel is certainly here. And the performance of young Cathy in particular is so perfect, so gleeful and excitable and ready to screech in protest. She felt so real."

Classics are often my favourite thing to read, because I love the historical significance of them, and they’re such a great avenue for learning about particular time periods and places. I really would like to resurrect H. G. Wells and have him take me in his (real) time machine to both the unknowable future with heightened class distinctions as he imagines it, and the past of ornate ticking clocks and so on. Let me in. "I went to see this in a non-IMAX special screen that had rumbling, grumbling seats, and I do think that made me more excited. I liked being rumbled during tense moments. I also fell deeply in love with poor, gorgeous cyclops Polyphemus. He’s simply adorable. I really like him.

It was sort of funny that the emotional throughline of the movie was, essentially, another Oppenheimer moment (note to self: Odysseus x Oppenheimer slash fiction possible untapped market?), but what I loved was the general structure of the film, weaving through various jaw-dropping sequences and beautifully resonant scenes with incredible effects. Circe I am clapping and screaming at your antics. Do it again Circe.

Also, Tom Holland is my sweet son."
