My college friend group chat blew up this week because someone saw this guy in the background wearing our college gear. Immediately several people in the chat said they knew him--he'd gone to UNC with us--and something along the lines of, "Trust me, you don't want to know anything else about him."

82 years ago today, on D-Day+1, my wife’s grandfather and 2,688 others were headed for Utah Beach when their ship, the USS Susan B. Anthony, hit a mine. It sank with all their gear, but not before they all evacuated safely—apparently still the most successful rescue of its kind without loss of life.

Once again: German universities were the envy of the world before the Nazis rose to power and took an ideological wrecking ball to the entire enterprise. If you want to know how long it took for German universities to recover… they haven’t.
