I'm a retro game geek who loves Japanese video games especially. MSX computers and game preservation are my passions. I also livestream frequently at: https://www.twitch.tv/themp83

(Re-uploaded with improved video quality and an error fixed.) Here's the spiral staircase scene from Ys III: Wanderers from Ys across the different versions of the game. For some reason, this scene isn't included in the Famicom and PS2 releases. #Falcom #Ys

Here's Randar as he appears in Super Cooks (MSX2, Disc Station Special #2, 1989). Super Cooks is a spin-off of the Golvellius series by Compile.

Gagnant is a #MSX game released by Humming Bird Soft in 1986. It’s quite good, with nice mechanics (enemies stay dead, destructible environments), but was released broken. The good ending couldn’t be reached, and the high-score feature didn’t work. @larsthe18th.bsky.social has now fixed it!

It was fun exploring the AX series for the PC-6001. Lots of stinkers or generic games there, but there were also games of some interest: Arabian Rhapsody (AX-1) Nostromo (AX-2) Olion (AX-5) Quest: The Adventure (AX-5) Bounder Robo (AX-9) Outlaw (AX-10) Pop Hand (AX-10) The Seven Bibles (AX-10)

A perfectly normal early English localization of Ys I: Ancient Ys Vanished - The Omen. It was released in the West for the Apple IIGS and DOS under the title Ancient Land of Ys. Nothing unusual here. Nope, not at all!

What a pleasant surprise! In 1998, Masakuni Mitsuhashi, one of the developers of Theseus (MSX), decided to remake the game and include it as one of the sample applications in "GAME BASIC for SEGA SATURN". I had no idea this even existed! It's quite charming.

I recently learned about the AX series for the NEC PC-6001 computer, published by ASCII in the early 80s. I became interested in the AX series after learning that "Quest: The Adventure" from AX-5 is a precursor to "Iligks Episode IV" (MSX). Time to explore the PC-6001! 🤓

I appreciate the extra effort Fairytale put into Mai when porting it from the PC-98 to the MSX2. The artwork was redrawn to suit the lower resolution, and the game even received additional animations that weren't in the original version. imgur.com/a/RI579WU

Nice mistake in the Game Boy sliding puzzle game, Franky, Joe & Dirk: On the Tiles. Developer accidentally used the password TVBS twice, meaning that there's no direct way to access Level 25, Difficulty 3 with a password. Easy to fix with a hex editor, however.

Randar, Compile Corporation's early mascot, got his own game series for the MSX2 computers in 1989 and 1990 (Japan only). Adventure of Randar games are RPGs with turn-based battles, and Arandar is a Bubble Bobble style single-screen action game.

Let's do this again! 😁 Here's many different MSX1 games attempting to do scrolling. Thanks to community for the suggestions. Some examples are smoother than others.

Did you know that MSX1 hardware is actually capable of smooth scrolling with the right kind of programming? Here's some examples:

Adverts for Guardic, a Compile game released for the MSX in 1986. It later got a direct sequel for the MSX2 known as Blaster Burn, which is an episodic shmup released on various issues of Disc Station (1988-1991) disk magazine. It's one of the games in the "Budruga Wars" saga.
