'Elektrizität' #FotoVorschlag Kernkraftwerk Rancho Seco. Der Betrieb wurde 1989 eingestellt, die Stilllegung 2009 abgeschlossen. Die Anlage erzeugt derzeit Strom mithilfe einer großen Solaranlage sowie eines Erdgaskraftwerks.

Kurz nach Sonnenuntergang – ein Blick aus dem Inneren eines Autos nach vorn. In der Ferne, etwa in der Bildmitte, sind zwei Kühltürme eines Kernkraftwerks zu erkennen. Links daneben steht der Kernreaktor. Das Licht am Himmel schwindet; oben erscheint er in einem hellen Blau, das weiter unten in einen bernsteinfarbenen Ton übergeht. Auf der Straße vor dem Fahrzeug leuchten die weiße Linie am rechten Fahrbahnrand sowie die orangefarbenen Reflektoren in der Straßenmitte im Schein der Autoscheinwerfer auf. Oben rechts scheinen Stromleitungen direkt vom Kraftwerk aus zu verlaufen.

'Elektrizität' #FotoVorschlag Als der dort ansässige Fischadler begann, auf einem Strommast ein Nest zu bauen, meldeten wir dies dem Versorgungsunternehmen. Hier ist das Ergebnis.

Wenn man zum Strommast hinaufblickt, kann man ganz oben die Zweige eines Nestes erkennen. Drei Stromleitungen verlaufen durch den oberen Teil des Mastes. Der Himmel darüber ist blau.

Am Rand einer Landstraße stehen zwei Hubsteiger eines Versorgungsunternehmens sowie ein weiteres Servicefahrzeug. Mehrere Arbeiter in neongrünen Warnwesten sind vor Ort. Die beiden Arbeitskörbe, in denen sich die Arbeiter befinden, werden dazu genutzt, das Nest auf eine erhöhte Plattform zu verlagern. Im Vordergrund weist ein gelbes Warnschild auf die Gefahr von Überschwemmungen hin. Zur Rechten erstreckt sich eine Wiese, die von einem Stacheldrahtzaun begrenzt wird; im Hintergrund ist eine größere Gruppe von Eichen zu sehen.

Blickt man zu den beiden ausgefahrenen Hubarbeitsbühnen hinauf, so ist zu erkennen, wie die Arbeiter der Versorgungsgesellschaft die neue, erhöhte Plattform für das Nest an ihrem Platz anbringen. Eine der Hubbühnen befindet sich über dem Strommast, die andere daneben, unterhalb der Leitungen. Der Himmel darüber ist blau.

Das Endergebnis – die erhöhte Plattform – ist oberhalb des Strommasts zu sehen; darauf befinden sich das Nest und zwei Fischadler. Der Himmel ist bewölkt, mit dazwischenliegenden blauen Stellen. Durch einige der Wolken scheint das Licht der Abendsonne hindurch. Darunter ist eine Gruppe von Eichen zu erkennen.

A statue of a little boy and a little girl. The boy is sitting on a bench. He is barefoot and wearing a hat, a long-sleeved shirt with a vest, and trousers with the legs rolled up. A large, glossy, grey-black headstone, curved inward. The front surface is so highly polished that it reflects its surroundings, while the sides and top consist of rough-hewn stone. On the front is a portrait of a woman who resembles Liza Minnelli. Diagonally above it, the name "Olechka" (Олечка)—an affectionate or charming diminutive of the name Olga—is inscribed in a cursive script. On the back of the headstone (not visible here), the name Olga Vitalyevna Khoroshchik (1947–2017) is engraved in Russian. Barely discernible in the photograph, there is a Russian inscription along the bottom edge of the front: "When time encounters memory, it recognizes its own powerlessness." In front of the headstone, a vase containing sunflowers stands on the ground.

A tall, narrow marble headstone, in which a distinct grain is visible. In the background stands an ornate black iron fence; flowers lie upon it, near the headstone. Beyond this, the ground rises—bare of vegetation—and is dotted with various trees and shrubs. In the upper section of the headstone, the name "Daniel Stewart" is engraved within the shape of an inverted horseshoe. Below this, it reads: "A native of Mount Thom, Pictou County, Nova Scotia. Died on January 22, 1863, in Copperopolis, as the result of a fall into a 115-foot [approx. 35-meter] deep shaft. Aged 26 years, 2 months, and 13 days."

#31DaysofGraves Day 25: Tree / Baum Columbia Cemetery Tuolumne County California I believe these trees are Cypress trees. If they were planted when the second burial occurred they would be 143 years old.

Two very large Cypress trees on either side of a headstone. The trunks of the trees are bare up to about the top of zhe headstone. Above the trunks they are very large and bushy. The plot has an ornate iron fence around it. The headstone is a faded white. A willow tree is carved on the top. Written on the headstone is Mrs, Henrietta Eshington. Died May 4, 1882 Aged 44 Yrs. Here rests a true wife and a devoted mother who was highly esteemed and loved by all. P. Eshington Died May 7, 1883 Aged 61 years. Im not positive that it says 61 years but it doesn't seem likely to be anything else.

Zwei sehr große Zypressen stehen zu beiden Seiten eines Grabsteins. Die Stämme der Bäume sind bis etwa zur Höhe des Grabsteins kahl; darüber sind sie sehr ausladend und buschig. Die Grabstelle ist von einem kunstvollen eisernen Zaun umgeben. Der Grabstein ist von verblasster weißer Farbe. Im oberen Teil ist eine Trauerweide eingemeißelt. Auf dem Grabstein steht: „Mrs. Henrietta Eshington. Gestorben am 4. Mai 1882 im Alter von 44 Jahren. Hier ruht eine treue Ehefrau und hingebungsvolle Mutter, die von allen sehr geschätzt und geliebt wurde.“ Zudem: „P. Eshington, gestorben am 7. Mai 1883 im Alter von 61 Jahren.“ Ich bin mir nicht ganz sicher, ob dort tatsächlich „61 Jahre“ steht, aber es ist die wahrscheinlichste Angabe.

A more recent grave with a female angel carved from marble. She is sitting on a marble bench with the name of the deceased on a black plaque on the front of the bench. The angel has large wings that reach from the top of her head to just below the top of the bench. She is looking towards the other side of the bench. In her hands she holds flowers and at her feet are more flowers, candles and a flag. At the opposite end of the bench are more flowers. Behind there is tan colored gravel and the concrete perimeter of another grave. Beyond that is another narrow headstone. Written on the plaque is Eleni Nichole Caldwell 3/21/1992 -12/23/2024 Loving mother, wife and daughter. Your love will light our way. Your memory will be forever with us.

Ein neueres Grab mit einem aus Marmor gehauenen weiblichen Engel. Die Figur sitzt auf einer Marmorbank; an deren Vorderseite befindet sich eine schwarze Tafel mit dem Namen der Verstorbenen. Der Engel hat große Flügel, die von seinem Kopf bis knapp unter die Oberkante der Bank reichen. Er blickt zur anderen Seite der Bank. In den Händen hält er Blumen, und zu seinen Füßen liegen weitere Blumen, Kerzen sowie eine Flagge. Am gegenüberliegenden Ende der Bank befinden sich noch mehr Blumen. Dahinter erstreckt sich eine Fläche mit beigefarbenem Kies, begrenzt durch die Betoneinfassung eines weiteren Grabes. Weiter hinten steht ein schmaler Grabstein. Auf der Tafel ist zu lesen: Eleni Nichole Caldwell, 21.03.1992 – 23.12.2024. Liebevolle Mutter, Ehefrau und Tochter. Deine Liebe wird unseren Weg erhellen. Die Erinnerung an dich wird für immer bei uns bleiben.

A faded white headstone. The top in a semicircle has an engraving of a willow tree, urn and perhaps leaves. The sides if the semicircle have a scroll shape. Written on the headstone is Adam Gerber, Born April 18, 1819, Died May 7, 1878. Emilia Gerber Born Jan. 19, 1860 Died October 27, 1867. Native of Germany. Written below was "The relics of our departed Worths, Lies shrouded here in Gloom, And here with aching hearts we Mark, Our own dear parents Tomb;" There may be more written on the bottom because there is a semicolon at the end of the sentence. Also it mentioned "parents" but the age of Adam was 59 and Emelia was 7 years old. Behind the headstone is surrounded with bare dirt and Oak trees. The concrete border of another grave can partially seen on the left.

#31DaysofGraves Day 20: Fire Jackson Pioneer Cemetery, Amador County, California: A mass grave at the Jackson City Cemetery. The grave holds many of the miners that died in the 1922 Argonaut mine fire disaster. A newspaper article from the disaster is below. cdnc.ucr.edu?a=d&d=DCS192...

A view from one end of the mass grave. The grave is perhaps 100 feet long. There are jaged stones sitting vertically and lining the top and bottom of the grave. The grave is covered with various size and shaped rocks placed in a bed of concrete. Above and below the grave on the left and right are areas of bare dirt. Within the grave area a two small headstone can be seen. Another grave with a concrete border and narrow headstone is on the left. Beyond the grave more headstones can be seen in the distance. On the right is a memorial plaque with a wreath.

Auf der linken Seite befindet sich ein weiteres Grab mit einer Betoneinfassung und einem schmalen Grabstein. Dahinter sind in der Ferne weitere Grabsteine erkennbar. Auf der rechten Seite befindet sich eine Gedenktafel mit einem Kranz.

#31DaysofGraves Day 19: Water Drowning in "Table Mountain" Tuolumne County California. Most likely it was the Stanislaus River. More info in the Alt text. Columbia Cemetery Tuolumne County California

It is interesting that it says “in Table Mountain”—rather than “at” or “near” Table Mountain. While I could not locate a place actually named “Table Mountain,” There is actually a narrow, 18-mile-long mountain with a flat top that goes by that name.

The headstone is white (perhaps marble?) and features a black vein running diagonally across its front. Near the top, the inscription “In memory of” is arranged in a semicircle. Within this arc are the symbols of the Freemasons: a square and compasses. Below this, it reads: “G. D. Plummer, born in Epping, N.H., drowned at Table Mountain on May 22, 1858, at the age of 28.” It was erected by his twin brother on September 1, 1872. At the very bottom right, the name “Hugh Coyle” appears. The bottom third of the headstone is discolored by the red soil that surrounds it.

Es ist interessant, dass dort „in Table Mountain“ steht – und nicht „am“ oder „in der Nähe des“ Table Mountain. Zwar konnte ich keinen Ort ausfindig machen, der tatsächlich „Table Mountain“ heißt, doch es gibt einen schmalen, etwa 18 Meilen (ca. 29 km) langen Berg mit flachem Gipfel, der diesen Namen trägt.

Der Grabstein ist weiß (vielleicht aus Marmor?) und weist eine schwarze Ader auf, die diagonal über die Vorderseite verläuft. Im oberen Bereich ist die Inschrift „In memory of“ (Zum Gedenken an) halbkreisförmig angeordnet. Innerhalb dieses Bogens befinden sich die Symbole der Freimaurer: Winkel und Zirkel. Darunter ist zu lesen: „G. D. Plummer, geboren in Epping, N.H., ertrank am 22. Mai 1858 im Alter von 28 Jahren am Table Mountain.“ Der Stein wurde am 1. September 1872 von seinem Zwillingsbruder errichtet. Ganz unten rechts findet sich der Name „Hugh Coyle“. Das untere Drittel des Grabsteins ist durch die rote Erde, die ihn umgibt, verfärbt.

Three graves are visible. The ground consists of soil covered with dried leaves and grass-like weeds. There are three headstones and two footstones. The headstone on the left is the tallest; a smaller one stands in the middle, and an even smaller one is on the right. Additionally, there is another grave featuring a concrete border and a headstone. A white picket fence runs along the left side. In the background, there are also several pine and oak trees.

Es sind drei Gräber zu sehen. Der Boden besteht aus Erde, auf der sich getrocknete Blätter und grasartiges Unkraut befinden. Man erkennt drei Grabsteine sowie zwei Fußsteine. Der Grabstein auf der linken Seite ist der höchste; in der Mitte steht ein kleinerer, und rechts befindet sich ein noch kleinerer. Zudem ist ein weiteres Grab mit einer Betoneinfassung und einem Grabstein zu sehen. Auf der linken Seite verläuft ein weißer Lattenzaun. Im Hintergrund stehen außerdem einige Kiefern und Eichen.

#31DaysofGraves Day 16: Faith Sutter Creek, Amador County California Odd Fellows Cemetery The inscription on the bottom reads. "Gone to a land of pure delight, where souls immortal reign, infinite day excludes the night and pleasures banish pain"

A headstone has written on it "John Whitford who departed life August 29, 1879 Aged 29 years & 4 M, Native of Cornwell England" Below is written "Gone to a land of pure delight, where souls immortal reign, infinite day excludes the night and pleasures banish pain" On the headstone a rope is carved around the edge. On the top is the three links of the odd fellows and two hands clasped together.

Auf einem Grabstein steht geschrieben: „John Whitford, der am 29. August 1879 im Alter von 29 Jahren und 4 Monaten aus dem Leben schied; gebürtig aus Cornwall, England.“ Darunter ist zu lesen: „Gegangen in ein Land reiner Wonne, wo unsterbliche Seelen herrschen; ein ewiger Tag verdrängt die Nacht, und Freuden verbannen den Schmerz.“ Entlang des Randes des Grabsteins ist ein Seil eingemeißelt. Im oberen Bereich finden sich die drei Kettenglieder der „Odd Fellows“ sowie zwei ineinandergelegte Hände.

A metal tombstone that is partially rusted. Mounted on the front is a cross that appears to be chrome. The cross has roots on the bottom. The rusted metal has lettering cut outs and chrome underneath the letter so that when looking at the right angle the letters shine. The left side has written "The Lord is my strength and my song" The top has the name James Nelson Vela. The bottom is partially obscured by flowers but the year 1963 can be seen. The bottom right has 10/20/2025. The right side has written Big Grandpa, Father, Strong Man, Singer, Mentor, Friend. In the background other tombstones can be seen blurred out.

31DaysofGraves Day 15: Language Columbia Cemetery Tuolumne County California Many of the people that came to California during the Gold rush were from all over the world. In the counties of Amador, Calaveras and Tuolumne there are many from Germany, Italy and England just to name a few.

An above ground grave made of bricks. The bricks are a rectangle about the width and length of a normal size grave. There doesn't appear to be anything inside. The bricks are about 2.5 feet high except for the end which is about 5'. On the outside of the end is a plaque with the name of the deceased. P. A. Bowmen M.D. of Utica N.Y. Died Nov. 29 1855. Aged 30 yrs. Below that a piece is broken out. What appears to be written is free...by his frie...Jackson.

Ein oberirdisches Grab aus Ziegelsteinen. Die Ziegel bilden ein Rechteck, das etwa die Breite und Länge eines gewöhnlichen Grabes aufweist. Im Inneren scheint sich nichts zu befinden. Die Mauerung ist etwa 2,5 Fuß (ca. 76 cm) hoch, mit Ausnahme des einen Endes, das eine Höhe von etwa 5 Fuß (ca. 1,50 m) erreicht. An der Außenseite dieses Endes befindet sich eine Gedenktafel mit dem Namen des Verstorbenen: P. A. Bowmen M.D. aus Utica, N.Y. – verstorben am 29. November 1855 im Alter von 30 Jahren. Darunter ist ein Stück herausgebrochen; zu erkennen sind noch die Worte „free...by his frie...Jackson“.

#31daysofgraves Day 13: Unusual Jackson pioneer cemetery, Amador County California There are no markers on the grave, I would be interested to find out what the story is about the stones. Das Grab ist nicht markiert; mich würde interessieren, welche Geschichte sich hinter den Steinen verbirgt.

A raised family grave bordered by rectangular, concrete-colored stone blocks. The grave surface itself is covered with soil. At the front, the ground is laid with smooth stones hand-painted with colorful patterns; a small gap follows this initial section of stones, succeeded by another group of stones. There are no stones on the larger section of the grave surface behind this area. No grave markers are visible.

Ein erhöhtes Familiengrab, dessen Umrandung aus rechteckigen, betonfarbenen Steinblöcken besteht. Die Grabfläche selbst ist mit Erde bedeckt. Auf der vorderen Seite ist der Boden mit glatten Steinen ausgelegt, die von Hand mit bunten Mustern bemalt wurden; nach diesem ersten Steinbereich folgt eine kleine Lücke und anschließend eine weitere Gruppe von Steinen. Auf dem dahinterliegenden, größeren Teil der Grabfläche befinden sich keine Steine. Es sind keine Grabmale zu sehen.

At Rest. The headstone is lifted and tilted to the right. The grave is covered with a pile of old somewhat flat stones that are about one foot diameter or more each. The stones have moss and lichen on them. In the background is a short retaining wall with large dark gray rectangular stone blocks.

Ein grauer Grabstein mit der Inschrift „Joseph Costa / 1860–1898 / Ruhet in Frieden“. Der Grabstein ist angehoben und nach rechts geneigt. Das Grab ist mit einem Haufen alter, eher flacher Steine bedeckt, die jeweils einen Durchmesser von etwa einem Fuß (ca. 30 cm) oder mehr aufweisen. Die Steine sind mit Moos und Flechten bewachsen.
