We have been following the engineering process to solve a problem. We must create a shelter for scientists in the polar regions. We had to consider the different problems that may be faced and how they can be overcome. We used wood work tools today to begin our constructions.

Blubber is a thick layer of fat that many polar animals have, but how effective is it? We conducted a test to find out. First, we sat our bare hands in ice water for as long as we could. We then covered a gloved hand with blubber(lard in a bag).It helped us keep our hands in the water longer.

We explored cognates & false friends.Cognates are words that sound similar & mean the same thing in different languages (e.g. elephant and elefante).False friends look and sound similar but have different meanings.The Spanish word ropa looks like rope, but means clothes! @falkirk1plus2.bsky.social

Did you know that an Emperor Penguin must balance an egg on its feet for many weeks throughout winter? An egg sitting on the Antarctic ice for more than a few minites could be fatal for the baby inside. We had a go at holding and moving the "eggs" and found it difficult to do for just a few minutes!

Testing whether a "penguin huddle"prevents less heat loss than a single "penguin". We determined the independent, dependent abd control variables for the experiment.

A messy morning as we covered our polar bear models with modroc. They are looking fab!

To accompany our videos, we are making 3D models of polar bears. Today we started by creating the basic form using paper, foil.and tape. The next step is to cover them with modroc...its.going to get messy in P7!

We used Canva to create short movies to explain the problems faced by polar bears as Arctic ice melts. The House Captains launched their first 'House Captains' Challenge' today! There will be one per term. Children in P1-P7 are invited to create a mascot for their House, animal theme suggested. Entries to be submitted to the House Captains by Friday 2nd October. Prizes to be won! 😀

Why do polar bears have white fur or rough paws? Why does an albatros have waterproof feathers? Why do penguins carry eggs on their feet or huddle in groups? These are features and behaviours that help them to survive. We explored the physical and behavioural adaptations of different polar animals.

We explored the wildlife of the polar regions. In trios, we researched key aspects of the animals lives and used Canva to present our findings. We also created images of the animals to go along with our research.

In the first chapter of our novel, a serious crime occurred. We used the information we found to create a police witness appeal. It had to inform the public but also catch their attention.

Well done to everyone who delivered a house captain speech at this morning's election. You all demonstrated confidence and maturity when delivering your speech to your audience. You should all be proud of your efforts. We look forward to hearing the result!

We have started our first novel study. From the cover, we established that the city is not physically divided. It is divided by beliefs,opinions and rivalries. The clues on the cover and blurb led us to predict that something serious might happen to one of the characters.

Today in Spanish, we learned las vocales 🇪🇸 — the five Spanish vowel sounds. Learning these is important because Spanish vowels are not pronounced the same way as those in English. This will help us to read and pronounce new words more accurately. ¡Muy bien! 👏 @falkirk1plus2.bsky.social

We have been exploring the Spanish artist Salvador Dali. He was a surrealist, meaning his paintings were dreamlike. We used one of his paintings as inspiration to create our own surrealist artwork. Keep an eye out for the finished masterpieces!

¡Hola! This year we will be learning Spanish in class. This week we explored Spain and discovered that Spanish is the official language of 21 countries around the world. How many Spanish speaking countries can you name?
