This looks interesting - and you can watch on- line if you can't attend in person. More information here: www.wakefieldhistoricalsociety.org.uk/whs-events/l...
What might have been? A sliding doors alternative?
You know you're at sea when the bar reminds you of the ship's prow.
Who needs a publicist when you have @tobywoody.bsky.social!
Just taken delivery of yet another excellent project from @wakefieldcivicsoc.bsky.social in general, and @mrtrickett.bsky.social particular. A splendid idea and food for thought for Peterborough Civic Society
Thank you to everyone who came to the Wakefield Civic Society event at WX Wakefield last night to hear me present the results of the Society's summer project 'Tell Us Your Favourite Things About Wakefield'. I hope you enjoyed the event and reading my new book for the Society!
Another excellent show tonight at Theatre Royal Wakefield with, tonight, the Nick Ross Orchestra.
A legacy of using bus and train tickets as bookmarks when out and about is that you come across the occasional reminder of when you last read a particular book, as I did here. Cider With Rosie, last read in 1991 apparently.
Yes, it's a door. But it's relevant to an upcoming project by @wakefieldcivicsoc.bsky.social for #HeritageOpenDays
An enduring memory. As seen in a shop window in Pickering.
Medieval murals and modern stained glass at St. Peter and St. Paul's Church, Pickering.
Very pleasant visit to Pickering this week with @wakefieldcivicsoc.bsky.social calling at Beck Isle Museum in the morning and then free time in the afternoon. Nice lunch at the White Swan Inn.
Earlier this week, I visted Eyam (yes, the 'plague village'), Ashbourne and then Tissington Hall with @wakefieldcivicsoc.bsky.social. A very enjoyable day out.
Enjoyable visit to Kiplin Hall & Gardens yesterday with Wakefield Civic Society - despite the heat outside, the Hall was pleasantly cool. Lots to see and learn as we were shown round by an enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteer guide.
I've taken many photographs of Wakefield's County Hall over the years but don't think I've ever captured this view before.
Had a very enjoyable day out yesterday with @wakefieldcivicsoc.bsky.social visiting Stamford Bridge and Sledmere House.
Really enjoyable play last night at Theatre Royal Wakefield - Sherlock Holmes and 'The Hunt for Moriarty'.
Today was the final day of the Heath BESS planning inquiry which I've been attending as a representative of @wakefieldcivicsoc.bsky.social. Closing statements were made by all parties and we now await the decision by the Planning Inspector - expected mid June.
Trying to do some work but can't resist dipping into this. Delightful as ever. 'Enough Said' extracts from Alan Bennett's diaries from 2016 to 2024 (and other stuff).
Spotted in Wakefield recently. Did a double take. Pleased to note that it didn't say what I thought it said, which is just as well, given that it's on the top floor of an office block and hardly 'convenient'.
A fine building if I ever saw one is Wakefield's Waterton Building & Mechanics' Theatre on Wood Street. Originally built as a public library, newsroom & music saloon in 1821/23. Subscribers paid £25 a share. In 1841 it was leased to the Mechanics Institution bought it in 1855. /1
Books read so far in 2026. (A slow start to the year for me though - usually average one a week.)
Been out delivering membership packs for @wakefieldcivicsoc.bsky.social this evening. Nice to meet new members face to face.
The Cat That Slept For A Thousand Years at @wxwakefield.bsky.social tonight as part of Artwalk Wakefield. (You can see it during opening hours until 12th April.)
