We’ve been rolling out major updates to Translucens, improving the algorithms and adding new cleaning settings, including a new feature I’ve wanted for really long: The masking tool! Now you can use a brush to erase background noise or protect regions from enhancement.

A user interface screenshot of the Translucens software showing a split-screen comparison of a medieval manuscript page. The left side shows the dark, heavily stained original page, while the right side shows an enhanced version with pink and blue masking overlays applied. The right-hand sidebar displays the "Masking" panel with the Brush tool active, showing options to Protect, Erase, and Unmask, with a brush size slider set to 99px.A user interface screenshot of the Translucens software displaying a split-screen results view. The left half displays the original faded, brown manuscript folio with severe ink bleed-through. The right half displays the processed full-color version, featuring a clean, legible cream-colored background and sharply defined text.A user interface screenshot of the Translucens software showing a split-screen manuscript analysis. The left side displays the original dark parchment, while the right side shows a high-contrast blue color-channel visualization where the background is dark navy blue and the medieval script stands out in bright, glowing light blue text.A user interface screenshot of the Translucens software showing a split-screen grayscale conversion. The left side shows the original, heavily discolored brown manuscript folio. The right side shows a highly optimized grayscale output, turning the page into a crisp, pure white background with stark black text for maximum readability. The right-hand panel shows the Grayscale parameters and tuning configuration.

We were excited to hear that some people at @imc-leeds.bsky.social already used Translucens! 🤯 Here are some new things that we have been working on in the meantime. Working on a paper with @vanlinduist.bsky.social! #DigitalHumanities #DH #Translucens

Workshop week is here! From today through Friday 44 novices, expert trainees and teachers from 7 European institutions work on their digital editions of older texts.
