No work talk, just fountain pens, fountain pen inks, pen and inksketches, crudely drawn cartoons, cooking, sumo, and occasional arthropod macrophotography. For now on Instagram: at mxcrobiotick
Day 3 (07/27/26) "❤️"for Mystery week of July #penandinkchallengejul26 Heart hands/snaps are common with sumo wrestlers and it's so adorable. I had a hard time deciding which models to use. These were Oshoumi and Shirokuma because the latter has the best smile #sumosketch #penandinksketch
Day 2 (07/26/26) "E" for Mystery week of July #penandinkchallengejul26 Endo, who is retired, but has not yet had his haircutting ceremony. I only remember him being somber and professional, but since he retired I've noticed more smiling photos of him. #sumosketch #inksketch #penandinksketch
Mystery week of July #penandinkchallengejul26 Day1 (072526): "W". i chose Wakamotoharu, one of the many top level sumo wrestlers that I enjoy watching. I started this as a sketch of him with his brother Wakatakakage, but I ran out of space. Initial sketch was in pencil, then inked, but roughly.
So glad Grand Sumo is back! I had a bit of time this weekend between gardening, art festival browsing, and a 5k to watch the first 2 days of the Nagoya basho. Day one was great, but day two was full of excitement and upset. Someone has to win and someone has to lose, but I want them all to do well
A couple other sketches and some photos of plains coreopsis. If it's native to here i'll try to plant it. is a beautiful plant. I think this time i should have left off the watercolor. sometimes the ink is sufficient on its own. #inkandwatercolor #weekendsketch
Catching up on #penandinkchallengejul26 with @sandi_myedachs @conklinpens_official @penandinkchallenge July 9 was "Aquarium". I did an #inkandwatercolor sketch of a pre-covid visit to the Aquarium of the Pacific. we took a behind-the-scenes tour and got to see my daughter's favorite shark
Not my usual weekend art, but just before the rains and bailing out window wells we had enough morning sun to make some cyanotypes using ready-made paper. The first 3 were made with just leaves; the second 3 with leaves and inverted photos on transparencies #experimentalart #cyanotype #weekendart
Cable airport sketching session. It was very hot, but in the shade there was a strong cooling breeze that made it pleasant. Also, we had noise cancelling earbuds and stopped periodically to watch planes landing and taking off.
some sketches from the middle of June. End of june has been hectic, so i haven't had time to do more sketching. some of these need some additions, but will have to wait.

Took the lightrail to spend a couple of hours sketching at the Norton Simon yesterday afternoon. I think it's the first time I've ever sketched inside of a museum. It was nice to see people quietly working on their studies of sculptures, paintings, and the garden. #saturdaysketch #penandinksketch
some silly sketches from the one flights that I was actually awake. 1. A seriously weird deer head seen in a window of an antique shop. I don't know why it's got fangs or bloodshot eyes or a unibrow. 2. in case you didn't believe me, here's the photo of the damnable thing 3. Not-Deer explains
attempt 2: sumo withdrawal->scrolling aimlessly through old sumo posts-> reminded of Sumo in Paris and the tourist photos to come. also accidentally planned our summer vacation during World Cup. enjoy random #sumosketches and #catsketches and apparently a warmup sketch of art supplies
Cat sun-day. I started with a continuous line drawing with #penandink and later added watercolor. I'm not sure whether i like the rough or refined ones better, but it's a good exercise for getting better at proportions. (palette is a sampler of Michael Harding watercolors from Lime Art)
Backlog of sketches Chances are i'll have to reupload some of these either because Instagram crops them or Bluesky limits the number. Some sumo-related sketches included. Natsubasho was crazy! It blows my mind how hard these guys work and how risky it is! They have my respect and appreciation.
. the other train line has a table. i'm working on this in my lap on the lightrail. poor gyoji's lips...sudden stop. Enho!!! from May 12th. I haven't seen yesterday yet Listening to Sisters of Mercy Lucretia because it's adreary morning and because it's a good song #sumosketch #trainsketching
quick sumo sketch. The proportions are off and you can't tell it's Ura, but I tried to capture Abi's "OmG Nooo! Incoming Ura Butt!" expression. i didn't quite get the mouth right. it was epic. Fortunately neither was hurt. #sumosketch #natsubasho2026 #inkandwatercolor
I'm traveling and supporting family. I was stuck in Denver for 8 hours, so I had some time for sketching. Since arriving, I've been busy cooking, helping with gardening, and running errands. If I have some downtime I might do some more sketches. Maybe some sumo sketches too.
rainy weekend = minimal gardening/ moderate running, but also more time for art. Here are a few more sketches: 1. Dogwood flower 2. Peering deer 3. #sumosketch 4. Atamifuji was caught off guard by a kid during the provincial tour & Ichiyamamoto (who roots for the kids)--Never underestimate kids.
watercolor sketches Eastern Towhees have returned but this was the first time I got a good photo that I used for the reference. other sketches are things or places on our walks #weekendwatercolorsketches
weekend ink sketches Hosia ink Studio Gardenia (beautiful chromoshading) Troublemaker Basilica Red. I've read a negative review that said it looks like dried blood, but I personally like dark reds that shade and dilute to different values. #fountainpenink #penandinksketch
My first oil painting. It's less about accuracy, more experimentation. I really like the flow and saturated pigments, though it takes longer to work layers. I have a few brands I've been trying, and also some media for texture, adjusting drying speed, walnut oil, & medium W to make watersoluble.
weekend watercolor sketches 1)from an evening run 2)dozing dog 3) ref from @drawdailytogether and @laurahartart - Fountain cat, Kyoto Japan 4) tutorials from a book borrowed on internet archive
Posting has not been a priority, but here are some #fountainpeninksketches from the last couple of weeks. Watercolor sketches in next post. 1) Cat in Hosia Ancient Ink 2) Dog in Kitty Inkpot Forest Wind ... Mt. bird 3) Value study in Kyo-no-oto Moegiiro 4) De Atramentis Pompadour Pink
(I think this never posted last week. Trying again) Kotoshoho is the GenX of Sumo. How is it that he does well & cameras/commentators either ignore him outright or keep referring to his win last July as a "fluke"?13 wins is not a fluke. He got yet another fighting spirit prize this Harubasho.
#Sundaysketches in watercolor, gouache, ink, and/or graphite 1. Roadrunners (Joshua Tree NP) (2 and 3 via @drawdailytogether) 2. @maluhendrikszen - Drenkelingenhuisje (shipwreck shelter), Terschelling, The Netherlands 3.@fioletowacytryna - March sun by the lake 4. cartoon faces, no refs
i love this cat, particularly because he is so neurodivergent. He has difficulty with the simplest tasks like walking straight, running into ways because he forgets to look before jumping, or balancing. he's also the smartest cat I've adopted. #caturday #inkandgraphite #weekendsketch
Sketches following tutorials (Patreon, the Jack Reid Watercolor Basics book, glamping "research"). My favorite reproduction (even with mistakes) was of @lachmair.art's boat tutorial. It's challenging, and mine lacks depth in comparison, but I'm learning a lot. #weekendsketches #artpractice
