Did you know Aug. 3 is 🍉National Watermelon Day?🍉 Today is as good a day as any to enjoy one of nature's sweetest treats. If you don't have a watermelon, or you're not a fan, here's a painting you can look at instead. I think this is our only still life on view featuring a watermelon.

A classic still life painting features an abundant arrangement of fruits, including watermelon, grapes, pears, peaches, oranges, apples, and a honeycomb. The fruits are artfully placed on a dark wooden table with an ornate cloth, beside a wicker basket and a knife. "Give and give, for it is never too little." - African proverb Artist Thandiwe Muriu uses African proverbs to reveal another layer of her work in "Canopy of Love." This proverb, coupled with the subject’s strong pose and twisted hair, depicts women as trees that give relief, joy, wisdom, and life.

Helen Frankenthaler was an American abstract expressionist painter and one of the earliest innovators in color field painting. She was a major contributor to postwar American painting and exhibited her work for over 60 years. Madame Butterfly is the 5th Frankenthaler work in the NCMA's collection.

Unless you feel like singing in the rain like the kids in this Barbara Morgan photo, you might want to drop by the NCMA and enjoy more than 5,000 years of art and culture - while staying dry! It's free, too. Actually, you could sing in the rain outside the NCMA & then come inside when you're done!

Did you know today is Cow Appreciation Day? 🐄 We didn't, either. But apparently, it is! With that in mind, here are a couple of paintings from our collection that feature cows: "Landscape with Cows" by Max Herrmann and "The Pasture" by Albert Pinkham Ryder.
