I'm not saying my wife and I are getting old, but it turns out we both have strong, conflicting opinions about whether pearl barley should be mixed with sticky white rice.

Very interesting. Far from Franco's traditional sleaze, this is more of a character study of a traumatised woman trying to navigate a patriarchal society. There are some parallels drawn with authoritarian rulers and domineering fathers. Anna Cohen is incredible. Unfortunately, it's slooooooooooooow!

I'm on baby duty, and have been scouting the paltry family-friendly offerings in my blu-ray collection. Luckily, at some point I bought a collection of Mel Brooks movies, so #nowwatching Silent Movie (1976). Interested to see a modern attempt at a silent comedy! #filmsky

#nowwatching Smile 2 (2024). One of the great horror sequels, and one that seriously outdoes the original. An interesting message about the demands of celebrity and the expectations we all have to perform for each other. A rewatch, but my wife suggested a horror film and I can't refuse! #horrorsky

#nowwatching The Vault of Horror (1973), another classic Amicus Portmanteau! Another terrific cast and a bunch of excellent stories (none of which actually come from The Vault of Horror comic). #horrorsky

#nowwatching Tales from the Crypt (1972). A classic portmanteau horror from Amicus, made up of stories from E.C. comics (though not all from the mag of the same name). This one contains my personal favourite Amicus segment: 'Blind Alleys'! #horrorsky

#nowwatching Penda's Fen (1974). A rewatch for me. As a fervently conservative boy comes of age, he discovers his mixed nature. At the same time, he starts to come to terms with the changing landscape of England, and with the fact that change is what keeps it alive. Still relevant today. #horrorsky

What a terrifying and fascinating film. All about trauma, and the way our memories of events, places, and people become self-justifying distortions; places where we trap ourselves and those around us.

Conclusions: 1) This is a folk horror movie. 2) It is truly, truly awful. 3) Shatner is utterly dreadful in it. 4) So is everybody else. 5) I love it.

#nowwatchibg Glastonbury Fayre (1972), a Nic Roeg film documenting the second ever Glastonbury Festival. As a veteran of several Glastonburys, and having spent a lot of time in Pilton (Michael Eavis once accused me of stealing his keys!), this is really fascinating. #filmsky

It deeply pains me that two of the biggest public faces of veganism/animal rights are Ricky Gervais and Morrissey. What a pair of absolute turnips.

#nowwatching Dawn of the Mummy (1981). An archaeologist opens a cursed tomb, unleashing a horde of flesh-eating...mummies. I saw this years ago - much more a zombie than a mummy movie, but I like zombies more than mummies, so I'm not complaining! #horrorsky

Terrific stuff! It plays out like an M.R. James story, with an artifact leading to a haunting by old Celtic gods. I have some books on Celtic mythology - time to dig them out!

Very very good. It covered the whole controversy in detail, with plenty of input from figures like James Ferman and archive footage from the likes of Mary Whitehouse. If you have any interest in the video nasties, this is essential viewing (moreso than many of the actual films...)

I just don't think it's possible to get bored with this one. Punk attitude, social commentary, endless weirdness, and a banger soundtrack. Absolute cult classic!

Terrorizer, live in Tokyo! They played the whole of the World Downfall album, plus a bunch of stuff from Hordes of Zombies.

Very good! If I was granted one wish, I would first wish that I had infinite wishes (obviously). After that I would use my wishes to try things out and see what the consequences would be, and then use other wishes to annul the previous wishes if things went south.
