What's annoying about this discussion in NYC specifically is that Mamdani proposed free *bus* fares, and for NYC buses (and ONLY buses) fare collection is a service issue (buses are slow in part because collecting fares takes a long time at each stop and on SBS you get random stops for fare checks).

why am I, a consumer in the richest country in the history of the world, typing "shallot" into a touchscreen on my day off for the pleasure of purchasing said shallot? it's a national disgrace.

An interesting question is whether there's any other kind of discrimination where "no she really believes it" would be treated as a defense. "She's not one of the bad antisemites, she just sincerely hates jews from an authentic place and says what she feels about it" would be nonsense.

What's funny is I'd absolutely say the interpolated novels in book one of Don Quixote have aged poorly, while the meta-narrative of book two shines brighter now than ever. Respecting the classics is taking them seriously as things to engage with today, not putting them on an untouchable pedestal!

"Elements of our culture grow outdated" is just a longer way of saying "aged poorly." Nothing about this term implies that the speaker doesn't think it's an inevitable process or wants censorship of outdated media. Use the term or don't, but it's just a way of talking about societal progress!

One of the really interesting things about New York History is how these efforts were simultaneous with good government reforms and power consolidation at the state level creating OTHER, sometimes competing, abilities to Just Do Stuff (as told most persuasively by Robert Caro).

One way of looking at this is that you're measuring the marginal utility, not the marginal amount of money. One of the inputs is "by how much does the amount that $1m would improve your life exceed the amount that $50k would improve your life," and that's NOT a linear scale for most people.

Apart from everything else, what a striking choice is to make an Odyssey that (with two major exceptions, both presented as faits accomplis) totally elides questions of truth and falsehood; one where the issue of truth when it arises is only about concealment or about perspective.
