Four new nickel(II)–flavonolate complexes bearing sterically and
electronically tuned tetradentate 4N donor ligands were synthesized
as biomimetic models of quercetin 2,4-dioxygenase. Structural,
electrochemical and kinetic investigations reveal that ligand
substitution strongly influences dioxygenolysis reactivity. Complex 1
with unsubstituted pyridyl complex exhibits enhanced 􀁓-back
donation, lower flavonolate oxidation potential and superior oxidative
cleavage activity toward dioxygen. Radical trapping experiments
indirectly support the formation of flavonoxyl and superoxo
intermediates during the reaction, providing mechanistic insight into
nickel-mediated dioxygen activation and flavonol ring cleavage.
