Before Jimothy, there was EDGAR: we caught a newborn elk back in 2021 with a stunted neck, probably due to a congenital defect. We named the little guy “Edgar” and while sadly he was not long for this world, we got a chance to learn about his condition which is rarely documented in wild animals. 1/6
Great, now I can’t use the one pdf map I uploaded to Avenza nor can I add points, tracks, etc. unless I “upgrade” to a paid account. I used this app for free during my entire PhD field work. Anyone using alternative free mapping apps these days?

Reminds me of the “adaptive fetal sex ratio” idea from long-lived mammals, except that predicts more males when times are good (partly because males tend to be larger and more expensive to produce). Females are larger in raptors so this makes sense!

Using tools to learn how to program is one thing, but I’m worried that we’re replacing the pursuit of a deep understanding of nature (that can only come from field experience and well-developed hypotheses) with contextless prediction machinery. Par for the course with modern ecology!
