After losing 4-1 to Belgium, Trump could always claim the USA won, organise a big stop the steal rally outside the World Cup final, urge his militias to storm the stadium, defecate on the pitch and trash the changing rooms, and then emerge scot-free and be awarded another FIFA peace prize.

Historical parallels are already being drawn with Benito Mussolini’s strong-arming of referees during the 1934 World Cup in Italy to ensure the hosts carried off the trophy. But then, Trump has often come across as an American Il Duce.
