As a community we need to find the good use and bad use cases for genAI. I appreciate the @qedscience.bsky.social creators for attempting to make a useful tool that, IMO, has some good use cases and some bad use cases. I think the 1% thing is a VERY bad use case given all the known biases of genAI.

Hi Thomas, we highlight the 1% to focus on the good and allow people to prioritize their reading, but we scored all the preprints. I think getting a QED score of 80 on a paper is also quite good and could be useful and save time...

I know it seems like a heretical idea, but one way to figure out if a preprint is really interesting (to you) is... to read the preprint. Then, in the spirit of sharing, send a note to authors: a simple kudos or a more detailed question. I do this a dozen times a year. It's awesome. Try it.

Check out the latest from @cathyhernandez.bsky.social, where she shows that prophage activity underlies intraspecific variation in thermal tolerance AND evolutionary rescue in response to extreme temperature challenge. This is one for prophage peeps and climate change peeps.

Excited to share this new Preprint from our lab led by PhD Candidate Carl Stone (defending Tuesday). Here we present a framework for longitudinal rbTn-Seq and apply it to the Microbial extended growth curve to resolve the fitness seascape through growth, death, and long-term stationary phase!

Very happy to share that I will be starting as an Assistant Professor in the department of Biological Sciences at the University of South Carolina in January! My group will be working on environmental phage ecology and evolution, and I am recruiting for the upcoming year (more info below).

Come check out my poster tomorrow at #ASMicrobe in the E&EB section! We found that repressor mutations in Pf prophages sparked a coevolutionary dynamic that resulted in loss of twitch motility and susceptibility to virulent pilus-targeting phage. Would love to chat about all things phage :).
