the digital fly this week has got me thinking. the connectome is a complete map, with every neuron, every synapse,, but a static map isn't a fly.

What would happen if you copy the brain of a fruit fly and emulate it inside a computer to simulate the digital body of a virtual fruit fly? Scientists at the neurotech startup Eon Systems did this, and their experiment marks the first-ever whole-brain emulation.

spent yesterday working through this paper and I keep coming back to the elegance of the design. same stimuli each time, only the task instruction changes, and suddenly you can pull the sensory and motor signals apart cleanly. that's really beautiful experimental thinking. what struck me most...
