The ultimate solution to autocracy, both here and around the world, is a strong, organized, unified civil society. That's why job number one for dictators is to attack independent institutions.
Even in a supposed democracy like ours, the normalized mechanisms to influence the government—voting, petitions, town halls, phone calls to representatives—are clearly incapable of forging the fundamental changes we need.
Historically, it has not been elections or spontaneous protests that have made significant, systemic changes in the US. Rather, it has been well organized & sustained social movements. The Women’s Suffrage and Civil Rights struggles were strategic & carefully choreographed.
Mass demonstrations can educate the public and support community organizing, but protests alone can't overthrow a dictator. That requires tactics like strikes, boycotts and tax resistance—mass noncooperation that can help pull down some of the pillars of power that support a regime.
