A water color pencil illustration of a young half elf woman (Lucina) holding up her dress skirt as it billows gently behind her, looking at the viewer with a bright smile. She has sun-kissed skin with freckles & bright blue eyes (left is light blue & right is dark blue). Her blonde hair falls below her shoulders right above the sleeves that drape her shoulders. She is wearing a pale blue dress with a sleek bodice like top & a flowing skirt. She also has a string of pearls around her neck & a small metal bracelet with heart cut gems on her right wrist. The background is a simple green gradient.

Apple charges people ~20% more than the Patreon list price and they keep the difference for themselves. They also hold the proceeds of iOS app sales for 75 days, making it impossible for creators to accurately predict earnings. They basically inserted themselves in order to rip *more* people off

Any of you using the ios version of Patreon to support me, switch to the browser version instead, cuz the apple fees have actually taken over 3000 usd from me in the course of a year

We shared some of our reasoning for keeping generative AI out of our creative process with @aftermath.site. Respecting our players' time and attention is at the core of everything we do. If something isn't worth our time to make, it's not worth our players' time to engage with it.

β€œWe don't use generative AI for art, audio, code, or anything else. We've been pretty outspoken about our stance, like with the 200 pins we gave away at GDC this year or our studio Christmas cards where we paid artists to draw what they thought AI-generated cards from us would have looked like.

We have spent time evaluating/experimenting with tools so we feel informed and understand what they can do, but that just gives us more confidence about not using them in any part of our production or preproduction processes for any of our projects. Among our reasons:

We care a ton about respecting our players' time and attention, so if something isn't worth our time to make, it's not worth our players' time to look at.

It's pretty important to have friction with iteration in creative processes. When ideas are cheap to try, they're challenged and vetted less before the implementation. That's going to lead to a lot of games fully realizing some half-baked ideas. We don't want to be the studio that tries to figure out that process.

Even the cases where gen AI quality might be good enough, it is not worth the toxic association. Our players are very clear that they don't want it.

We worked in VR for a decade. We've seen what happens when people make plans and change all their processes based on potential instead of focusing on the present. It usually doesn't work out.”

β€œWe see a future where intelligence is a utility, like electricity or water, and people buy it from us on a meter.” - Sam Altman. I will never stop thinking about how nakedly evil this is, and it has framed every single AI headline I’ve read since.

Sam Altman Says Intelligence Will Be a Utility, and He's Just the Man to Collect the Bills

"Intelligence too cheap to meter" doesn't quite come across the way Altman might intend.

I hope those load bearing followers know how much they mean to artists. Regulars, esp regular commenters that engage your work and story do not go without notice and are to be cherished. It's esp why I try to reply to let them know! (and why I wish I could keep track of any I've missed replying to )

Fun story and potential tip for artists: find a load boarding follower or two. When my account was brand new and less than 10 people knew I existed I had one follower who would like almost every piece I made. I appreciated his support so much that my partner knew his screenname- 🧡

It's not enough to be against AI, you need to be pro art. You need to be a champion of the art you love, you need to share that passion and joy, and do what you can to support the artists who make it, because it's not enough to hate AI, to hate what it's doing to art and media; you gotta love.
