Aaaand... as well as writing about Volunteers, I also wrote about Ryan Gosling wearing a Mary Maxim knitting pattern sweater in Project Hail Mary. You can't say I don't have range 😁 Did you know the company was named after Dauphin's own Mary Maksymczuk? Read it online at @winnipegfreepress.com

Popularity of sweater with Manitoba roots goes galactic after visit to stars in Project Hail Mary

It’s the ultimate interstellar fashion moment; a vintage-inspired Mary Maxim fox knit, worn by Ryan Gosling’s character in his latest blockbuster Project Hail Mary, has sent the crafting world spinnin...

I love a bouquet as much as the next person but can't ignore the environmental impact of fresh-cut blooms flown in from far-flung destinations. That's why I wrote this @winnipegfreepress.com piece. I can't wait to pick my own bunches when local flower farms open their gates this summer 💐😍👩‍🌾

Non-botanical bouquets offer twist on Valentine’s Day florals

Flowers? For Valentine’s Day? Groundbreaking. As beautiful as they may be, gifting a ubiquitous bunch of cellophane-wrapped blooms on Valentine’s Day is hardly original. There are far more imaginative...

I've always been a fan of service journalism (once a Time Out writer, always a Time Out writer) so am not ashamed to say I wish I'd thought of this first. Carol Cassell's Mapping Winnipeg site is a lifesaver for local families - mine included.

Mapping Winnipeg website has become a go-to resource

Carol Cassell could be the queen of understatement. “It’s just my hobby,” she replies when asked to describe Mapping Winnipeg, the passion project she began in 2020 during the lonely and isolating day...

This year I shall (try to) consistently post stories I write on people and places and things and feelings for @winnipegfreepress.com. Declutterer extraordinaire and all-round good egg Mandy Berndsen was a great interviewee, who generously shared her super practical, easy-to-follow tidying-up tips.

Decluttering doesn’t have to be overwhelming, says Manitoba home-organization entrepreneur

Your to-be-read pile is teetering over the edge of the bedside table, there’s a container labelled oats in the pantry housing an assortment of pasta and the basement floor is covered in toys that have...

I mean we have one of the few remaining books sections in the country, featuring local reviewers and books. I reported on local writing all year, both in my section and in arts and life, including a roundup on 10 notable local books from 2025 (which could have easily been 20) running Monday. 🤷

From the La Presse site: info.lapresse.ca/a-propos/not... I'd say the FP is doing pretty well considering our arts & life team has approx seven writers, one of which is part-time (me). Really upsetting to read this when we bust our guts to find and write the stories we do. Merry Christmas.

Winnipeg is alive with art: writers, theatre, music, exhibits, happenings, visual art. But you wouldn’t know it from the @winnipegfreepress.com Arts & Life section. Other than the occasional nods, it's mostly U.S. celebrity filler. We’re more than that. Tell our stories.
