I think this take confuses direct/literal translation with contextually/culturally aware translation and localization. Localization can completely erase things that were originally present, or invent new things that never existed. It's certainly not some inherently benign technique.

Okay I think I'm starting to get social media. You make bad faith dunks on a single statement made by someone you otherwise probably agree with on most things, judging them solely based on that single interaction. Bonus points if you get your large follower count to bully them. That sound right?
