The National Women’s Council of Ireland: promoting rights & equality

📢📃 NWC welcomes the publication of the first Action Plan under the National Strategy for Women and Girls, which includes issues NWC has campaigned for. 🎯But greater ambition is needed, particularly on measures to improve gender parity in local government and tackling the childcare crisis.

62% of parents in Tramore, Waterford, cannot find suitable childcare. And it's not just Tramore, there is a growing presence of childcare deserts across the country. This morning, Corrinne Hasson joined Ireland AM to talk about the childcare crisis and its impact on families and communities.

📢Game changing news: Your pharmacist will soon be able to re-prescribe your contraception We’re hoping this is swiftly implemented 🤞 Now, Government must also couple this with expanding Free Contraception Scheme to women aged 40, and eliminating eligibility criteria such as the PPSN.

Legislation criminalising the offering of accommodation in exchange for sex is being finalised today. Listen back to Corrinne Hasson on Morning Ireland discussing the journey to the criminalisation of sex for rent and what needs to happen next.

Today marks a huge win for women in Ireland. Government is enacting Jennie’s Law and legislation banning Sex for Rent. These are both important steps but now we must see further actions to create a victim-centered justice system and increase protection for renters. #EndVAW

We all want to see a society where women, and everyone, can live free from violence and abuse But when people chose to blame violence on migrant men, society loses sight of the real issues Join us in calling for the real solutions. Because when they get louder for hate, we get louder for love ❤️

We all want to see a society where women, and everyone, can live free from violence and abuse. But violence against women remains shockingly high. 1 in 2 women experience sexual violence in their lifetime. More than 1 in 3 women have experienced intimate partner violence. in 84% of cases the perpetrator is already known to her. It's her partner. Or her father. Or her friend. The services that respond to VAW are overstretched. And the legal system retraumatises. When people choose to blame migrants, they ignore the real problem, and the real solutions. This is the moment to take a stand against violence and against racism. Join us in our calls for more resources for frontline services, reform of the legal system, and long-term housing for survivors. As racism and misogyny grow louder, join us in growing louder for justice and louder for love.

Our hearts are so heavy this morning as we mourn the death of Jamey Carney, another woman killed in violent circumstances. We extend our deepest sympathies to her friends, family and wider community at this unimaginably difficult time. Women everywhere deserve to live free from violence. 🖤

💔 Our hearts are broken again today after learning of the killing of Adina Raluca Constantin in Portlaoise. We send her friends and family our deepest sympathies. Every woman deserves to live free from violence and fear.

❤️ At the National Women's Council, we have been campaigning for women who experience pregnancy loss have a statutory entitlement to paid leave afterwards. 👏 This week, government announced they will bring forward legislation to provide paid leave for people in these heartbreaking circumstances.

Paid leave for pregnancy loss is on the way

🎉Legislation banning sex for rent has passed through the Seanad! The Bill will now proceed to final stages in the Dáil on 15th July. This marks a significant milestone in protecting renters from sexual exploitation and coercion.

⌛Families in Ireland cannot wait any longer. ✊NWC supports a motion put forward by Claire Kerrane, SF, aligning with recommendations outlined in our Roadmap to Public Childcare, crucially, our call to reduce fees through the State paying educators’ wages and costs.

📢 NWC and survivors have long called for survivors to be able to transfer between local authority housing lists because long-term housing is a key aspect recovery from violence ✊️ NWC will continue to campaign for an end to all forms of violence against women

Domestic violence survivors to be allowed transfer between housing lists. Press Release, 29 June. Image of woman and child.NWC and survivors have called for this for some time now. Many women fleeing domestic violence face homelessness or housing insecurity. Long term housing is a key part of recovery from abuse. Image of houses. "A woman may want to get very far away from her abuser, to somewhere she has support, but previously she would have lost her place on the housing list. So it's extremely welcome she can now keep her place if she chooses to move". Corrinne Hasson, Executive Director NWC. Image of Corrinne Hasson

Yesterday, NWC convened the All-Island Women’s Forum (AIWF) in Belfast to plan and refocus our priorities for the year ahead. We'll continue working with women’s groups and organisations across the island to ensure women’s voices are heard and represented on key social, economic & political issues.

We hope you are at peace now, Noreen. We send our deepest sympathies to the loved ones of Noreen Daly, who has been murdered in Waterford. Their loss is devastating, and impossible to fully capture in words. Women everywhere deserve to live, and die, free from violence.

3️⃣ The mandatory 3-day wait is paternalistic, medically unnecessary, and delays women from accessing timely care, sometimes forcing them to travel abroad. 👏 NWC welcomes proposed legislation to remove it and we will keep campaigning for abortion access for everyone who needs it.

🎉 It's NWC's AGM! Our keynote speaker, @jenniecstephens, brought her Feminist Rage ✊️ and passionately described how systems of oppression are linked and having real-world impact today. 🙏 Thank you also to Minister @NormaFoleyTD for sending us a video message

NWC stands in unwavering solidarity with anyone who has been afraid or experienced intimidation after bad actors took to the streets in Belfast perpetrating violence, intimidation and arson. Violence does not solve violence, and makes everyone feel more unsafe.

👏 Welcome news - Jennie's Law has been approved by Cabinet. ✊️ NWC will continue to campaign for the prevention of all forms of violence against women, a survivor-centred justice system & supports for survivors as well as proper consequences for perpetrators.
