NYS Mesonet

@nysmesonet.org

We are the nation's most advanced Mesonet with 127 real-time weather stations covering the State of New York, including at least one in every county/borough. https://nysmesonet.org/

As the Bomb Cyclone Blizzard moves farther northeast, our NYSM cameras are capturing how much snow fell across NYC! Our Murray Hill site, part of the NYC Micronet, shows just how quickly the snow piled up as the storm moved through the city.

Did you know we have a snow network? This is our site in Harrisburg, deep in Tug Hill, NY — one of the snowiest spots in the East thanks to lake-effect off Lake Ontario. Feet upon feet of snow! That big tube? It’s a CS725 Snow Water Equivalent (SWE) sensor.

Extreme Cold WARNING for a majority if not all of the State. NY this weekend: breaking our heat bills and breaking our spirits. Dress accordingly! Check out NWS warnings for your backyard weather station at nysmesonet.org

At our sites we use weight scale precip guages. Sometimes we experience false precip and have tried many solutions. One thing we discovered is spiders love to crawl in our gauges and make homes! How can we naturally deter them? Peppermint packs!

What a milestone! This year, we're celebrating our 10th anniversary of the NYSM internship program and welcoming our 23rd class of interns! Since 2016, we've trained over 100 students @ualbany to become future leaders in science, engineering and beyond. Welcome to the team!

We have just broken the NYSM all time high temperature record! Current highest temperature is now 99.3°F at Staten Island. The previous record held was 99.06°F

Happy one year to our youngest standard site — Lake Placid (LKPL)! Thanks to LKPL, we’re gaining valuable insights into regional meteorological data A quick look at the air quality reveals a spike in PM2.5 levels on 6/8/2025 — resulting from smoke from Canadian wildfires

A very spring like day out across WNY with the passage of a warm front earlier, bringing temps closing in on 70 degrees, and strong gusty winds upwards of 50mph. Webster LiDAR depicting 100-knot winds at ~5000 meters above ground level (~500mb)! #nysmesonet
