This is absolutely a huge problem in protest culture and it’s a major obstacle to allowing protests to grow. People are turning up to protests to fight Trump, ICE, recent abuses. Invariably the speakers are going off about 200 years of stolen land or US imperialism, and many of those people leave.

This chart documents one of humanity’s greatest achievements, in my view. We just lived through the fastest population growth in human history. It would have been impressive if food supplies had merely kept pace — but on every continent, they grew even faster than the population.

This is why I got a degree in political science, so I can spend the rest of my life explaining- to friends, family, and strangers on the internet- that rally round the flag effects are actually rare and require specific circumstances and aren't just "presidential approval goes up when he does war"

Fascinating thing about this story is that you could easily write a better and IMO more accurate one about a woman who has fallen in love with someone 17 years older, and has concluded 'I don't want to run the risk of not getting to enjoy my time with you' and has lived frugally to achieve that.

The real reason behind it is militaries are expensive and being an island behind another island is cheap but no one wants to publicly make that argument.
