Levante cloud (“Boina de Levante”) appears on top of Gibraltar when southeastern winds (Levante) blow. It’s part of the orographic cloud setup (nubes de estancamiento), frequent in summer, which contributes to explain the singular microclimate of the Strait of Gibraltar.

Aphid lions (Chrysoperla sp.) are common prey for Drosophyllum in mid-spring (April–May). I suspect that adult females mistake the mucilage droplets, both visually and fragrantly (VOCs), for aphid infestations and land on the leaves to lay their eggs to secure food for their larvae. #EMBAUCA

Drosophyllum is a greedy carnivorous plant, particularly in spring. However, its funnel-shaped flowers (despite having five free petals) prevent it from trapping and digesting its pollinating insects.

When wildfires offer opportunities to native species, fire is part of the ecosystem. Drosera cuneifolia, a sundew species endemic to the western Cape mountains in South Africa. Very abundant in recently burnt patches of wet fynbos.

El calor extremo y el viento mantienen activos numerosos incendios de la península

Dos personas han fallecido en los incendios que comenzaron el pasado fin de semana en la península ibérica y que se han ido multiplicando por diferentes zonas de Galicia, Castilla y León, Andalucía, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura o Madrid. La ola de calor que no abandona al país, las fuertes rachas de viento y su desplazamiento cambiante, y la sequía térmica dificultan las tareas de extinción. El Gobierno decretó ayer la fase de preemergencia y miles de personas han tenido que ser evacuadas.
