Posted this over on r/KindaFunny but figured I'd put it here as well as a series of images (with alt-text ofc). TL;DR I had an incredible time at #KF100 and so much of that was bc of how wonderful and kind the community was. 🥹

Some words about #KF100

Hello KFBFs. (Kinda Funny Best Friends)

I don't come here much these days, but I'm a writer at heart, so I hope you'll grant me a little grace as I post this.

I am currently burning time in San Francisco as I wait for my flight back home to Atlanta, and have of course been reflecting on what has been one of the most fulfilling weeks of my life.

Much of that comes from being in attendance for a show that I've spent over a decade watching & supporting now, watching in real time as Kinda Funny put on an absolute banger of a show for all of us. No surprise there.

However, what DID stun me, despite truly innumerable testaments over the years, was how kind and welcoming the community was. Anytime someone saw my name tag, pointed, said "It's OMGLX!!" and came over to introduce themselves, chat, dap me up, give me a big hug-- really made my day and put a big smile on my face.

I don't say this out of some misguided sense of self-importance (though I'd be lying if there wasn't a *little* bit of vanity there, my chosen moniker is derived from my name, after all)-- at the end of the day, I'm just some guy with an outsized amount of free time, passion and too many opinions.

But that brings me to why I started writing this in the first place.

I think this really started for me a few years ago when Greg and the team would talk about the negativity that often pervades online spaces, where anonymity gives people the cover to say really fucked up shit to strangers for no good reason, to gatekeep things that should be accessible to anyone, and so on. You may remember hearing the term "the silent majority" a lot during this time.

It was around then that I decided I wanted to be a more positive and outspoken voice the spaces I entered, especially the ones that mattered most to me. And it's all the more clear now after this last wonderful week, that it creates a virtuous cycle of good that, to me, was well worth breaking through that fear of being perceived.

I booked this trip with more than a little anxiety, as it's the first time I've solo traveled so significantly, without friends or family in tow, or waiting on the other side to anchor me. The moment I was able to have my first conversation with a Best Friend, these concerns and the need for a kind of social safety net vanished. And that's something truly special that no amount of words or level of monetary support can adequately convey.

Now, in no way do I want to suggest that lurking is somehow wrong or lesser than, or that constructive criticism is unwelcome either. I met several self professed lurkers this week and it was an absolute delight to chat with them as much as it was to meet the big names of the community.

I'm just saying, specifically for those of you out there who are accustomed to passively taking in the content (which again, is fine!)-- maybeee consider leaving a comment when and where you are able. Something as simple as "Andy made me laugh a lot this episode!" or "Thanks for the stream/review."

Because the next time I am able to attend an event like this, whether we spend hours yapping or if all we do is silently share a space together because one or both of us is shy -- I would love to be able to reflect an ounce of the recogniton that you all gave me. And with that a reinforcement that I existed, that I had the smallest of impacts, that I mattered.

Thank you Best Friends, I love y'all.

~OMGLX

A primer for how you should deal with outlet layoffs as someone not laid off! DO: - Express sympathy - Be upset with corporate decision makers - Repost people looking for work - Share articles and things you like - Shut the fuck up unless you are doing these things

I like to think Link not getting up for the global debut is fitting. In this moment we’re all Navi yelling at Link to get up and DO SOMETHING!

It has come to my attention that this “Orange Party” has a similar mouth feel but we will not be pursuing legal action at this time.

What if I just took the last three hours to plan a modular tabletop/board game shelf using Multiboard Rails because BoxThrone is pretty but expensive.

Tron Ares does the Tron thing where the VFX are really cool but the story fails to commit to anything interesting while saving the movie I wanted for an uncertain Tron 4.
