Doggy Don’t Care – Review

Any pet owner has had those moments where they wonder what their precious pets do when you’re not at home. I can only imagine that developer Rohan Nowell and publisher Rotub Games let their imagination run wild when they brought Doggy Don’t Care to life. Unleash chaos, solve puzzles, and leave your mark (literally) in this bone-afide puzzle platformer adventure. If you love silly games like Untitled Goose Game or Just Crow Things, Doggy Don’t Care is exactly the type of game you will also love. A naughty little Pug named Charlie (who doesn’t love a pet with a human name) makes it clear that he truly doesn’t care when his owner leaves for the day.

Curse of Resthaven – Updated Demo – Review

The Regreening – Demo – Review

I’ve always been called a tree hugger. I’m a lover of nature; I even studied land reclamation at university. So, I will always have a soft spot for a game that has me bringing life back to deserted lands. Enter The Regreening, a soil punk fairy tale and cozy sim game, deeply steeped in Baltic folklore. Developed by Positive Impact Games and published by ByteRockers' Games, I loved the cycle of cleaning up trash and making the world around me more beautiful. I recently played the demo, now available on Steam, and found the relationship between the main character and her grandmother to be heartwarming, and it reminded me a little of the relationship with my own Grandmother.

Tearoom of Terror – Demo – Review

A few months ago, I was lucky enough to review the full release of The Mermaid Mask, after falling in love with the demo earlier this year. That style of game has really resonated with me, and when the Panic Department reached out with something similar that they thought I would enjoy, I jumped at the chance. This is the demo for Tearoom of Terror, developed and published by Sundew Studios. This is a cozy-gothic narrative cooking mystery, and from the first moment I set eyes on it, I couldn’t wait to dive in.

Why does no one ask you about your favourite dinosaur once you become an adult? That makes me sad because we all know dinosaurs are cool. Some of the coolest dinosaurs are the theropods; they walked on 2 legs and were fierce. Common examples are velociraptors and the T-Rex. Developed by Lost Token and published by Dionous Games, Theropods is a short and sweet point-and-click prehistoric and sci-fi game with an emotional punch right from the start. Without spoiling too much, you play as a cavewoman who wakes from a dream about losing her mother.

Welcome to Mars 9 – Review

Welcome to Mars 9 is a short, story-driven sci-fi adventure from Sonomio Games. You wake up on a space station, orbiting Mars, with no recollection of how you got there. Throughout the 1-2 hour game, you will try to discover its dark secret, work through moral dilemmas, and discover 1 of 5 possible outcomes. You are River; you meet BrAId, the artificial intelligence, who explains that you are on the space station with everything you could desire, and it is a place full of luxury. There is an anomaly that has occurred, simply referred to as The Event, and every satellite has been destroyed in the sky, except Mars 9.

Woodo – Review

I was trying to remember when I first laid eyes on Woodo from Tiny Monks Tales and Daedalic Entertainment, but time is wibbly wobbly, and when I looked it up, I found that it was announced in the summer of 2023. Time flies. I remember being enamoured by its delightfully nostalgic design and cozy gameplay. Woodo plays like a cozy colouring book, and that is exactly how the 3-person team from Tiny Monks Tales characterizes it. You are presented with colourless outlines of objects, and your job is to fill them in with the colourful objects in your possession.

I love a good idle game and have covered many of them. There is something about a game that just sits on the corner of your monitor and allows you to check in as you please. Never expecting too much from you or demanding too much attention. I will always be more interested in an idle game that has cute characters, animation, and easy upgrades. I have been playing a lot of games where I am tasked with organizing and cleaning over the past year, and I love them. There is no shortage of them, and while they all have their own theme, the mechanics are mostly the same. Fofumia, from Actoon Studio, does things a little differently. The story begins with Amanda, Luna’s owner, and teacher, taking a holiday with their furry companion. While this should have been a simple and relaxing holiday, Luna had other plans, resulting in multiple levels of chaos, humorous situations, and a variety of locations.

One of the highlights from Summer Games Fest was something not on my radar at all. Mr. Records from Glee-Cheese Studio, published by Wired Productions and Gamersky Games. There was something about that little old man and the music that immediately captured my imagination. We are in a time where there have been a lot of music-themed or rhythm-based games. I always love a game that can transport you to a time or place, a fantastic nostalgic trip where you can use the power of your imagination. Mr. Records lets you walk in the shoes of an old man named George (which happens to be my late father's name, so there is even more nostalgia here).

A cozy, hand-drawn indie adventure…yes please. Finding Polka, developed by Shinnosuke Kumazawa (lidlocks) and published by PARCO GAMES, and its unique, beautiful ballpoint pen art style really caught my eye as something unique that I haven’t seen before. That alone makes this an easy recommendation; finding unique things in gaming isn’t always easy now, but it also helps that Finding Polka also has delightful gameplay and story. The world of Finding Polka is created from over 300 A4-sized drawings and 100 B4-sized drawings, and almost every person, animal and building is unique.

I’ve been playing a lot of platformers lately. It’s a genre I have a very mixed love/hate relationship with, but if you give me something with a fun character (and difficulty setting options), I am more than happy to lose a few hours in it to see what it’s about. I reviewed this on my XBOX Series X. Marsupilami 2 – Salsa Palombia, from Microids and Ocellus Studio, is a sequel, but you don’t need to have played Marsupilami - Hoobadventure from 2021 before diving into the action, and you don’t need the backstory to enjoy it.
