We're a 501c3 non-profit organization committed to protecting the endangered Southern Resident killer whale population

Happy International Orca Day! Here in the Pacific Northwest, we’re lucky to share our waters with multiple orca populations, including the endangered Southern Residents, the Transients/Biggs, and the Northern Residents.

Since last year, we’ve been tracking a proposed tidal energy pilot project by Orcas Power & Light Cooperative (OPALCO), which seeks to install a floating tidal turbine in Rosario Strait—part of the designated critical habitat for endangered Southern Resident killer whales (SRKWs) 🧵⬇️

Giant turbine sparks outrage in WA orca habitat: ‘Like a 747 in the water’

A proposed tidal energy project in the Salish Sea is facing fierce pushback from environmental groups. They say it could endanger the region’s last remaining Southern Resident killer whales.

Congratulations to our Intern/Restoration Technician, Samantha Hazard, on her successful completion of her Green River College capstone project. Her project focused on restoration efforts at Orca Conservancy’s Berrydale site, where she played a key role toward restoring this vital salmon habitat.

We have some incredibly exciting news to share! J Pod has a new calf! Designated J63, we observed this little one traveling with J40. This will be her first known calf! While we have no immediate health concerns at the moment, we’ll continue to update when we can.

Thank you so much to all of our volunteers and Free the Green for helping make our “128 Trees for L128” planting event a success! We had initially set out plant 128 trees, but thanks to everyone’s generous donation we more than doubled that amount and funded 340 trees!

We caught up with J Pod again last afternoon before they exited Puget Sound. Our encounter was brief, but we were able to get some good looks at J45 Se-Yi-Chnn & his big sister J40 Suttles, along with J41 Eclipse & her two youngest daughters J58 Crescent & J62.

The wait is over! The new Southern Resident flashcard deck is now available! The new deck features the newest members J62, L127 Scuba, and L126 Ken, as well as updates to existing members like L115 Mystic, a sprouting male, and K37 Rainshadow, who has a new notch on his dorsal fin.

With all the excitement & news surrounding the Southern Residents the past few months, we missed sharing some news about the Transient/Bigg’s orcas. T99E officially has a nickname! The Tulalip Tribe has named her “Qwiin qwiin oo qwii la” (pronounced Kwin kwin oh kwee la)
