📢 CFP: The USC-Huntington Early Modern Studies Institute British History Seminar invites applications to its inaugural (funded) 2nd book workshop. Participants will meet at the Huntington Library on Jan 30, '27 to discuss a chapter of their current WIP. Details in attached image. Please circulate!

The USC-Huntington Early Modern Studies Institute (EMSI) British History Seminar invites applications to its inaugural “second book” workshop. This workshop seeks to bring together mid-career scholars in Early-Modern British History, broadly interpreted, to bolster intellectual exchange and assist those working on their second (or subsequent) major project. Successful workshop presentation proposals will highlight new and emerging research on any aspect of Early-Modern British History in the period 1500-1850.

Participants will attend a one-day meeting at the Huntington Library on January 30, 2027 to discuss a pre-circulated, unpublished chapter-length portion of their current work-in-progress along with the work of other participants.

EMSI will cover the cost of domestic, roundtrip economy airfare and lodging for two nights. EMSI will book travel on behalf of participants in early Fall of 2026.

Proposals for workshop participation should include a two-page C.V. and two brief abstracts (250 words each): the first discussing the larger research project as a whole and providing a sense of where the author is in the project, and the second describing the chapter draft the applicant seeks to present at the workshop. Applicants will be chosen based on both the substance of their project and their synergy with other applicants.

Applications are due on July 31, 2026. Please submit applications as a single pdf file to emsi@dornsife.usc.edu.

Work for pre-circulation must be submitted by December 21, 2026.

Please direct any questions to the workshop convenors, Lindsay O’Neill (ljoneill@usc.edu) and Tawny Paul (tpaul@history.ucla.edu)
