« Hansen’s team found PFOS in Swedish blood samples from 1957 and 1971. After that, her lab analyzed blood that had been collected before 3M created PFOS. It tested negative. Apparently, fluorochemicals had … leached out of 3M’s sprays, coatings and factories — and into all of us.
Decades ago, Kris Hansen showed 3M that its PFAS chemicals were in people's bodies. Her bosses halted her work. Now she wrestles with the secrets that 3M kept from her and the world. (Published May 2024)
I'm starting to suspect that my tax dollars are going to munitions I'll never use, either
Opinion: Mamdani's idea may sound appealing, but it's NYC taxpayers who will take the hit, subsidizing discounts they may never even use.
I don't think people are ready for this kind of joke yet.
“even if nobody else is interrupting you, you will start interrupting yourself. You will start trying to get information in different ways.” I feel seen “It takes time to get into the rhythm that is required for reading something carefully and cautiously.”

Only one more day until they admit Mitch died. They’ll do it at 12:01am on August 4th to honor what a bastard he was.

I fully endorse this message (as a pompous academic who also enjoyed every other word of her review)
My favorite part of Wilson’s review will always be “There are no sex scenes, and all the food looks horrible.”
"bottoms and tops, we all hate the cops" Something I missheard as "bottoms hate the tops".
Y’all. I’m at the gym FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE FIRST PANDEMIC LOCKDOWN
Hey #Joburg: You know what to do for those not in Johannesburg: potholes are a huge thing here. A few blocks away, one of them got a birthday sign for its first year anniversary. It was fixed before it hit year two. That was clever, but penises might produce faster results. As they do.
in portland someone spray painted penises around potholes, and they got filled pretty immediately www.oregonlive.com/portland/202...
Hard agree with this thread. If Amnesty won't defend basic truths and human rights, then it's lost its raison d'être and might as well be sued into nonexistence. If you're not gonna fight for human rights, you might as well be just another AI.
Partly why it works is because Amnesty, like nearly all other cis allies, lacking a spine conceded. All defences of this action amount to denoting trans people as acceptable collateral and it being a waste of time. People are not considering the multiple effects of this action by Amnesty.
At the end of the day, what you're saying is that the destruction of trans rights and elimination of trans people from public life is only worth a 6 figure lawsuit. To me, that sounds like a cheap deal to protect something priceless as civil liberty.
Two other things: 1. If an org with the reputation and resources of Amnesty isn't willing or able to take this fight then literally who is? 2. It's entirely possible that they fight back and win! The defeatist attitude from allies is almost as harmful as the active attacks.
1. Amnesty chose to soften their language to describe authoritarian far right (or fascist) orgs as anti rights and still backed down, this signals to everyone that it simply isn't a viable to say the truth and to terfs that vexatious lawsuit based lawfare continues to work.
Prompt: create a Google Earth view of the State Department's map of Africa.
The State Department said it takes "full responsibility" for "hastily" altering and then presenting a map of Africa at a global AIDS conference that mislabeled every single country it highlighted. An analysis by Reuters found a watermark in the map image that suggests it was made with OpenAI.

I've been through a lot. Several open-heart surgeries, in fact. ❤️🩹 No one minimizes the pain and complications of surgery when they seek that kind of gender affirming care. Trans rights aren't optional. We aren't fooling you with gender dysphoria diagnoses. We go through hell to become ourselves.
So when we say "rural outreach"… who do we mean? Rural areas aren't a monolith. Do we mean big landowners & mining interests? Do we mean the rural cousins of urban libs, who tend to come from middle class+ rural families? (not exclusively obvs, but that's who can afford to send kids to college)
The truly stunning part of this story is that no one at Google was willing to say this was a bad idea *before* it got released into the world. The backlash was so quick and so intense because the inevitable bad outcomes were SO obvious.
Journalists, human rights advocates and open source analysts recoiled in horror at the move: "The opportunities for abuse and disinfo are literally boundless," said one. n.pr/4c7L91d
It seems really weird to have to say this, but: Make sure the maps you use are *real*.
Dunno if this made it on to English language social media, but a big hooha in France a few days ago: 2 young women got VERY dangerously lost after following a trail map they prompted from Chat. They were trying to reach a refuge that in reality was 180 km away. Mountain rescue.
As a former CA resident who packed up her life and left the country with her 🏳️⚧️ daughter after Newsom's smarmy & self-serving claim abt trans women in sports, I fucking endorse this message Also: Fuck you, Gavin, for taking CA away from my child. A million curses of pain upon you
Trans women warned us all about Gavin Newsom first. Please remember that as we (hopefully) pack him tf up for being the kept man of billionaires.
