Polish writer, comedian, and Korpiklaani fan in Yokohama. Ask me about Godzilla, Oda Nobunaga, Bane, Justified, or sumo. Work: The Japan Times, Tokyo Weekender, Star Trek, NatGeo, The Flytrap, McSweeney's, and Playboy. He/him. 日本語 OK!

In S03E10 of "30 Rock" there is a scene where one of the show's female writers is drugged and possibly raped. That's literally it. I guess the "joke" is that nobody cares that it happens but, damn, I think I need to stop this rewatch. The Yikes are getting to me.

Man, Season 3 is somehow even worse. Now we also have really eeky homophobia and biphobia! Look... is Tina Fey queerphobic? Did I miss that memo? 'Cause this rewatch is becoming super uncomfortable.

After the Sony Walkman first came out on July 1, 1979, it was almost immediately decried as a sign of the end-times and the unraveling of Japanese society itself. Here’s how being able to listen to music on the go was supposed to usher in a "Mad Max" future: www.tokyoweekender.com/entertainmen...

Why Critics Thought the Sony Walkman Would End Civilization

When the Sony Walkman launched in 1979, critics warned it would unravel society. Here's a look back over the moral panic caused by portable music.

BTW I recently binged The Hawk. It's funny, I'm opposed to golf in almost all ways but I do love golf stories. I think golf should only exist in fiction. Anyway Ferrell and Feimster have wonderful friend chemistry but I almost always think that about Ferrell. I think he's just easy to work with. 1/?

Will Ferrell and Fortune Feimster in The Hawk.

Many people use "sociopath" and "psychopath" interchangeably but the two are very different and actually easy to tell apart. Psychopaths have broad, U-shaped snouts where the lower teeth are typically not visible, while in sociopaths the snout is narrow and V-shaped & some lower teeth *are* visible.

Also, air travel HAS gotten better. Planes used to fly much lower. Turbulences and general shaking were so bad that barfing was all but guaranteed on all flights. I've only flown maybe ~30 times but in that time I never saw or heard anyone vomit because planes cruise at higher, smoother altitudes.

Food, man. Food is so much better than it was in 1986. All of it. Poor-people food, restaurant food, fresh food, frozen food. Food is just a hell of a lot better.

air travel is one of those experiences that has gotten monotonically worse over my entire lifetime

question though: has *anything* in the last 40+ years genuinely gotten *better*?

like, there's *more* stuff, sure, but is any of it *better*?

I'm going to say it: Every immune human except Carol and Manousos is the real villain of the series. Evil requires will or indifference. The Others are FUCKED, manipulative, and abusive, but they sort of can't act any other other way. They don't really have will. The other humans choose to be dicks.

Alright, y’all time for the last episode of Pluribus.
