sometimes i wonder what would have happened if america never did manifest destiny and just stayed the 13 colonies. do you think the louisiana purchase would become its own country. and all the land in the west would be separate countries run by the native americans. and texas would be part of mexico

Do normal adults usually invest money in the stock market? My parents claim this is something everyone does, but it feels like this might be a thing that I am being raised to think is normal but is actually weird. Like the poop knife reddit post.

HEY WEBCOMIC READERS! I bring you a hot tip from the far past of ye olden time webcomic readings! Webcomic corps hate you too, and your reading library could vanish tomorrow (like Tapas will at some point this year) Build your own list! If ppl don't self host, bookmark where they DO post!

Until then, a hot tip from the 90's: Build a bookmark list called "webcomics" Order them by when they update in the week (drag and drop) Read down the list thru week. Add to the list as you find new comics. Can confirm, as a person who struggles with exective disfunction, this is easiest way XD

i just watched the first episode of the office (au) and it was kinda boring. it doesn’t really have as many of the iconic scenes from the other pilots. the threat of layoffs/redundancies is replaced with the “threat” of forcing everyone to go remote, which nobody actually cares about but Hannah.

i watched the first episode of the office (uk) and then the first episode of the office (us). it was a surreal experience. i felt sympathy for gareth when his stapler was put in jello. he didn’t deserve that. i don’t give a shit about dwight though.

i remember in high school reading about a cool company that got bought, lobotomized, and subsequently went under, and thinking "why would you say yes to that?" i remember learning that companies have to make more in profit every year forever and thinking "well that's obviously impossible."

i’m pretty sure i’m not plural, but after reading about plual people and their experiences, i think i can understand/relate to some of them. “normal people” have one personality, and systems have “multiple personalities”, but i sometimes feel like i have “no personality”, if that makes any sense.

scientists are always saying shit like “oooooooh spider silk is stronger than a steel beam” but that can’t be true because I walk through spiderwebs all the time. i find it hard to imagine a person walking through a bunch of steel wool with that level of ease

There has been a great effort over many years to distance AI Safety discussion and policy from its origins and intellectual center, because its center is a sex cult started by a fan fiction author. If you want to be taken seriously you have to hide that.
