Aaron - Eat More Pie

Dad, nurse, poor ukulele player, want to paddle all of the lakes, bake and eat all the sweets, ride my bike fast, run not as fast, losing at table tennis to my kids. Love my flawed city of Saint Paul. Anti-fascist. Anti-racist.

Patient: I don't like it when nurses do X so I can't do this thing. Me: Well, we have to do X, and you can't do the thing in the hospital. P: But I like being able to do the thing. Me: I'm afraid that is not safe and is against policy. P: You don't understand. I want to do the thing. #nursing

One of the best unimportant parts of working on a transplant unit is that patients are not supposed to get fresh flowers. Because of that, everybody gets to enjoy the flowers at the nursing station. Burying your face in flowers and taking a deep breath always helps on a busy shift.

A bouquet of roses, carnations... and other pink, white, and yellow flowers that I can't name. A Magic 8 Ball is on a counter below the flowers. An isolation cart with two drawers slightly open in the background. Ugly tan and other tan floors are also in the background.

This is a cropped image from a drug ad, and it makes me crabby. Not, the drug. The paddles. They're FAR too short. Guy can't even get the whole blade in the water! And you have a beautiful wood canoe, but you're using aluminum and pastic paddles? For shame. At least they're wearing bucket hats.

Image of a couple happily paddling a canoe, but the paddles are too short. Wood canoe. Blue and white cooler in the middle of the canoe. Bucket hats on the paddlers.

In the late 80s, I lived in married student housing next to the St. Paul campus of the U with my family. I distinctly remember my mom talking to me as we drove through Uptown and pointing at the McDonalds, "That's where punks hang out." I guess she was right. Apologies for FB screenshot.

Screenshot from a Facebook page titled Historic Minneapolis Minnesota, with a caption of the picture, "Hennepin Ave. 1985". Half a dozen people are in the picture, but in the center is a man in a leather jacket with an impressive mohawk, and another man next to him, also in a leather jacket looking quite serious. In the background is the awning with a McDonald's logo.

3 patients with 1:1 attendants, 2 in mitts, one in restraints, an active GI bleed, multiple insulin drips. It was a HARD day on the unit. Everybody helped one another, checked in with each other and stayed positive. I'm proud to be a part of this transplant team.

20th anniversary today. It feels like it went by both very quickly and very slowly. Kind of hard to wrap my head around. I just wish it wasn't a school night and a night for a union meeting. Anniversary date with my cute wife will have to wait a couple days.
