Hive mind: who remembers a folksinger from the 1990s named Dev Singh? Possibly based in AnnArbor, but he toured extensively, a troubadour, a minstrel! I always caught his gigs here in Portland. A dulcet tenor, his signature tune was “Rose in Spanish Harlem.” Anybody?

It’s hard to amplify a new book when there are so many good ones to be read! But the story collection Lake Effect, by Hillary Behrman, winner of the Mary McCarthy Prize at @Sarabande, deserves your attention. Easily my top read of 2026. Stunning.

Thorn is out of print, but I recently saw it at Manzanita News & Espresso in sunny Manzanita by the Sea. The coffee is worth the trip. The book is too! My first book won the 2013 Chandra Prize at BkMk Press, and later won IPPY gold in the collection category.
