🦷 What did South America's ancient marsupials eat? Dorien de Vries et al. combines dental topography and machine learning to reconstruct the diets of fossil metatherians, revealing how their ecological diversity changed through deep time. #EAVP2026 #Palaeontology

Can you tell what an animal eats just by looking at its teeth - even if it evolved on the other side of the mammal family tree?🐒🦘 We studied primate and marsupial teeth and found that, in general, 'yes, we can'! Using dental topography, we reached a dietary classification accuracy of ~70%. 1/6

What a joy it was to work at @naturalis.bsky.social for the first year of my Veni fellowship! 🌿🇳🇱 I will carry out the remainder of my fellowship at the @manchester.ac.uk as part of the Ancient Life group.🔬🇬🇧 I'm very excited for this next chapter of my fellowship on mammal evolution!

This month, I had the pleasure of visiting the HUGE fossil mammal collection of the @amnh.org!🗽🏙️ As part of my NWO Veni fellowship, I made moulds of teeth of fossil hyraxes and notoungulates to study their dental evolution.🌿🦷 Thanks to the curators and preparators at @amnh.org for hosting me!

Data collection for my VENI project on notoungulate and hyracoid evolution is going well! Visiting the vertebrate paleontology collections at the Museo de La Plata was a dream - mostly because I had three amazing student from the Universidad Nacional de La Plata working with me! ✨ muchas gracias ❤️🧉
