We are the Paleoclimate Dynamics group from the Alfred Wegener Institute! Opinions are our own.

🔬In our new study, my first-author paper, we investigated whether Greenland ice cores could provide information about the occurrence of extreme winter events in Europe. ✅ Short answer: Yes, they do. 📄Read the study (open access, no paywall) cp.copernicus.org/articles/22/... 🧵Long answer ⬇️

Northern Greenland transect stacked ice cores as a proxy for winter extreme events in Europe

Abstract. High-resolution ice core records from the Greenland ice sheet provide critical insights into past climate variability across seasonal to multidecadal timescales. A key proxy in these reconst...

Developing Earth System Models is essential for climate research as they are to represent more components of the Earth System than climate models of lower complexity. However, it is not an easy task! Dr. Jan Streffing, the developer of AWI-CM3, will show at #EGU25 the work of building AWI-ESM3.

Can you imagine a world without the Antarctic Circumpolar Current? At #EGU25, PhD candidate Hanna Knahl will introduce you the world of the Eocene-Oligocene Transition, around 34 Ma, where the ocean gateways were much different from now! Deep time for real!

Climate modelling is a powerful laboratory to understanding climate processes at various scales. However, not all models are able to capture the effects of smaller scale perturbations in the Earth System. Our PhD candidate, Alexander Thorneloe, using FESOM2 did a wonderful job at tacking this issue!

The Arctic is undergoing an amplified warming and changes in its climate variability when comparing to the average global temperature. At #EGU25, Yongyue Luo will show us how the Atlantic Multidecadal and Pacific Decadal Oscillations modulate the climate variability in Eurasian sector of the Arctic!

Our first presentation at @egu.eu General Assembly 25 is from Dr. Lars Ackermann, one of our postdocs. His work focuses on modelling the Earth System with AWI-ESM, especially by incorporating components that are not usually present in climate models, like icebergs and interactive ice sheets (COOL)!

From this week until the @egu.eu General Assembly in Vienna, we will show you the contributions that PaleoDyn will be making to science at the conference! We have plenty of our scientists attending EGU this year showcasing amazing research in the form of oral, PICO and poster presentations!

The new book organized by Gerrit Lohmann, our section head, is out and open access! Conversations on Climate feature interviews tackling climate change and science from the view of many amazing scientists! For epub or pdf download: link.springer.com/book/10.1007...

Conversations on Climate: The People Behind the Science
