This is 10000000% truth. Even computer science/engineering degrees do a terrible job at teaching you how to be a software developer. There need to be way more course work on debugging and adding system features to established code bases.

There are many good answers to this but the most correct is Ultima. This series absolutely dominated the early evolution of RPGs directly into MMOs with Ultima Online and then just... vanished. EverQuest wounded UO and then WoW delivered the killing blow, and the series vanished.
