Escomb's St John the Evangelist (Co. Durham) is one of Britain's most complete Anglo-Saxon churches - built c.7th–8th century largely from reused Roman stone, with original windows, doorways and chancel arch still intact. Saved from demolition in the 1870s. A genuine time capsule.

The 12th century Mole. This amazing Norman doorway is at Kilham, Yorkshire East Riding. It has six orders with plenty of zig-zag as well as decoration in the gable above. On one capital is a roundel featuring a mole, as often depicted in medieval bestiaries. bestiary.ca/beasts/beast...

Between the 13th & 19th centuries Kilham (Yorkshire East Riding) had a market. The only evidence now is this bull ring - used for bull baiting. One hopes the bulls gave as good as they got. This one has listed status.

Before the mid-20th century many churches were covered in foliage. It's now very rare to see a church like this one at Folkton, Yorkshire East Riding.

Mid-15th century stained glass depicting St Margaret, St Nicholas, Landwade, Cambridgeshire. The church once held much of its original glass but it was removed in the 19th century. Twelve panels were returned in 1926-7.

A medieval interpretation of war elephants. Each carries a fortified howdah on its back. No doubt carved from a second or third-hand description. Note the flappy bat-like ears, the hooves, and tusks masquerading as fangs. Burwell, Cambridgeshire.

"Restoration" in Victorian times. Remember - a medieval church may not be as old as you think it is.

Sir Goddard Pemberton looks rather cramped on his Monument at Rushden, Northamptonshire. The Pemberton family occupied Rushden Hall from 1461 to 1641. Goddard died on the 1st of August 1616 of the “new ague or sickness”.

The C12 tympanum at Egleton Rutland. Taken in 35C temperatures 2 weeks ago (28C in the churches!) as part of a 2 day visit to re-shoot 24 Rutland churches, updating my 2000-1 images for the forthcoming release of my parish churches archive. A challenging trip which I survived.

The Extraordinary Armada Panel Originally as part of the chancel tympanum & now on the west wall at Bratoft church, Lincolnshire. Probably painted soon after the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588.
