Patrick Munro was a Scottish rugby international, who played for his country 13 times from 1905 to 1911. Later he became Governor of Khartoum. In 1931, he was elected Conservative MP for Llandaff & Barry, which he held until his death in 1942 while on a Home Guard training exercise at Westminster.

William Brace was a miner. He won South Glamorganshire in 1906 as a Liberal-Labour candidate. He initially took the Liberal whip, until becoming a Labour MP until 1909. In 1911, he became deputy leader of the Labour Party. He remained MP for South Glamorganshire until the seat's abolition in 1918.

RAW4 makes up 39.4% of the electorate of the current Cardiff North constituency. When the area first transferred to Cardiff it was included in the short-lived Cardiff North West from 1974 to 1983.

The latest Random Area of the Week (RAW4) is in the northern suburbs of Cardiff. Specifically, it contains the Coryton, Whitchurch, Rhiwbina and Thornhill districts of the city. It is sub-Area 15 in Area 81a Cardiff (West & North). Some of this became part of Cardiff in 1967, and the rest in 1974.

At the end of World War II, some of the area of RAW3 was used to build temporary housing estates, Lowfield Camp and Tranby Crofts, to serve those displaced by the bombing of Hull. Some of this accommodation was subsequently requisitioned by the British Army and used as a transit camp.

Richard Law was Conservative MP for Kingston-upon-Hull Haltemprice from 1950 until he was elevated to the peerage as Baron Coleraine in 1954. He was the youngest son of Andrew Bonar Law, Prime Minister for seven months from 1922 to 1923.

Stanley Jackson played in 20 cricket Test matches for England, captaining them in 5 (pictured here to the right of W G Grace in 1899). He became Conservative MP for Howdenshire in a 1915 by-election, remaining until appointed Governor of Bengal in 1926. In India he survived an assassination attempt.

Throughout its existence from 1997 to 2024 the seat of Haltemprice & Howden was held by the Conservative David Davis. In 2008 he resigned to fight a by-election on the single issue of civil liberties. The by-election was not contested by the other major parties, but attracted a record 26 candidates.

The constituents located in this week's random area (RAW3) had been represented by a Conservative MP continuously since 1885 until the 2024 General Election, when Emma Hardy won Hull West & Haltemprice for Labour with majority of nearly 9,000.

RAW3 (sub-Area 2 on the Map) makes up 25.4% of the current constituency of Hull West & Haltemprice. Prior to 2024, the only other time that the area had been associated with a Hull constituency was during the period 1950 to 1955 when it was part of Kingston-upon-Hull Haltemprice constituency.

The latest Random Area of the Week, RAW3, is part of East Yorkshire which is in the current Hull West & Haltemprice constituency. Specifically, it largely comprises the East Yorkshire wards of Tranby and Willerby & Kirk Ella. (It is sub-area 2 of Area Map 80b Hull.)

RAW2 includes the site of the Trinity School of John Whitgift, a private independent school. The school moved to its current location in 1965 when the former Shirley Park hotel was demolished. The hotel had, since 1912, occupied the mansion of Shirley House which was built in the 18th century.

Andrew Pelling became Conservative MP for Croydon Central in 2005. In 2007 he lost the Conservative whip after assault allegations. He stood as Independent in 2010, but lost. He joined the Labour Party, but was expelled in 2022. In the 2024 General Election he contested Croydon E for the Lib Dems.

David Winnick was Labour MP for Croydon South during the 1966-70 parliament. He lost in 1970 and tried to regain the renamed Croydon Central seat in October 1974 but failed by 164 votes. In 1979 he was elected for Walsall North, where he remained MP for 38 years.

John Moore was Conservative MP for Croydon Central from February 1974 until 1992. He had a meteoric rise under Margaret Thatcher, and was at one time supposedly her anointed successor. Being made DHSS secretary after the 1987 election was his undoing, and he was sacked.

Since 1885 RAW2 has been represented by MPs of the following parties (ignoring any change of allegiance after election): 1885-1945: Conservative (or Liberal Unionist) 1945-50: Labour 1950-66: Conservative 1966-70: Labour 1970-97: Conservative 1997-2005: Labour 2005-17: Conservative 2017-now: Labour

Since 1885 the area covered by RAW2 has been in a version of a Croydon constituency: 1885-1918: Croydon 1918-50: Croydon South 1950-55: Croydon East 1955-74: Croydon South 1974-2024 Croydon Central 2024-now: Croydon East (Note that the pre-1974 and post-1974 Croydon South have little in common.)

RAW2 (25a & 25b on the Map) comprises just 3.2% of the current Croydon East constituency. Since 1885 it has always been in a Croydon constituency. The area directly been the two disjoint parts of RAW2 had been in exactly the same constituencies as RAW2 until 2024, when it became part of Croydon S.

For the second Random Area of the Week, we have come to the London Borough of Croydon. Specifically, an area just to the south-east of East Croydon station and another part which contains four schools and a golf course. (It is sub-Area 25 in Area Map 14 Croydon (plus Streatham).)
