Hundreds of people died in county jails across the state in recent years. After @illinoisanswers.bsky.social reporters found that dozens of these people weren’t counted by the state agency responsible for tracking in-custody deaths, the agency said it would audit and update its data.

A big update to an important case: Alaska is dropping charges against a family of American Samoans it had accused of voting crimes. NEW: DHS's Inspector General releases a scathing report about the Everglades detention camp known as "Alligator Alcatraz." The OIG finds that the now-closed camp, violated multiple ICE standards. The OIG also confirms detainees were punished with placement in a metal cage in the Florida heat.🧵

The cage itself is placed on a tiny spot of fake turf, and then surrounded by another chainlink fence with razor wire on top. The cage is covered by a roof, but it's entirely exposed to the outside otherwise, meaning mosquitos and no air conditioning.

A second federal judge has issued an order blocking the new USPS rule on mail voting. This is a separate case from the one in which a federal judge issued another block last week. (This judge refused to block Trump's order in May because USPS had yet to issue a final 'rule', which it since has.)
