Extra irksome because, while Returning officers are almost always Local Authoritiy Chief Executives, they (at least did and I believe still do) get an additional payment for it. One could say a task you always do but virtue of your job is part of your job...and that you should do it properly.

I don't know why councils occasionally do this. It's not legal to get up on stage and go "The winning candidate won this many votes, now go away until tomorrow if you want anyone else's figures", so why are they not taking the few extra seconds to add everyone's votes or a photo of the declaration?

In Scotland, Labour led the charge to abolish Clasue 2A/s.28, against fierce and well-funded opposition, both political and social. And now, we're actively making life worse for people becuase it's tricky and difficult to make the arguement, and we are actively afraid of nuance.
