This image shows the before-and-after portrait of Alford Gardner, a prominent member of the Windrush generation who served in the RAF and later helped rebuild post-war Britain. During WWII, he joined the RAF as ground crew and was part of the first batch of recruits from the West Indies to arrive in England on June 3, 1944 After the war, he returned to Jamaica but came back to the UK as a passenger on the HMT Empire Windrush, docking at Tilbury Docks on June 22, 1948.Settling in Leeds: Gardner settled in Leeds, where he lived for decades, married, and raised eight children. He co-wrote a memoir titled Finding Home: A Windrush Story with his son Howard and is a key figure in documenting the experiences of Caribbean migrants in BritainDuring World War II, a bustling Butlin’s holiday camp in Filey was transformed into RAF Hunmanby Moor, a vital training ground for 4,000 West Indian and Caribbean volunteers serving in the British Commonwealth forces. Following a long-running campaign to secure a permanent home for their memory, a blue plaque was finally unveiled on April 1, 2023. Located on a private building on Filey's Queen Street, this poignant memorial ensures that the immense contribution of these wartime servicemen is never forgotten by the Yorkshire coast.

We talk a lot about getting people to consume historical content or to pick up employable “skills” for other uses We talk a little about alt-ac, as an excuse for keeping grad programs going We don’t talk about the fact that soon, nobody is going to be around to produce new knowledge in our fields

A drum I keep banging is that full training of an academic worker (from undergrad through tenure) is about 16 years. We may JUST NOW be beginning to feel the full first wave effects of the 2008 austerity. The ability of our fields to reproduce themselves has not been addressed as any point.
