The man that hath no music in himself, Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds, Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils; The motions of his spirit are dull as night, And his affections dark as Erebus Let no such man be trusted. Mark the music.
Off to The Spaniel's Tale here in Ottawa in the hopes that they'll order it for me!
I am absolutely thrilled to present to you: How to Build a Universe (Theoretically Speaking) available for pre-order now, wherever you buy your books! www.simonandschuster.ca/books/How-to...
@darthbluesky.bsky.social I am pleased to announce that, after 4+ years of effort similar to the video below, Indy the mighty fisher dog has succeeded in catching… a stick.
Friends/acquaintances/strangers: I’m a soon-to-be 61-y/o retired journalist/speechwriter/media relations guy about to go back into school as an undergrad. I’m also a big LLM/AI skeptic. It’s been suggested I blog my experience as an old-timey student who doesn’t use AI. Would anyone read that?
I hardly know any researchers other than myself in my field who aren’t using LLMs extensively in their work. In my field, they’re being used mostly for coding assistance, computations (Claude is getting quite good at this), reference searches, and conceptual “discussions.” Some writing help too.
I am absolutely certain that: 1) I will never have anywhere near the amount of wealth that Musk, Zuckerberg, etc. have, 2) in a few decades we will all be equally dead, 3) I will have lived a happier life than them.
Our criteria for success are disastrously skewed. In my view, a successful person is one who does more good than harm, on any scale. On this measure, most billionaires are massive failures, while humble folk in my neighbourhood who look after other people are highly successful.

This should go without saying but replace Christian with Muslim and it would probably result in terrorism charges.
Evangelist Whitney Lynn says she preaches on planes because she loves “a captive audience.” She's not alone. It's becoming a trend. If spreading your message requires listeners who can't escape, maybe it's not as compelling as you think. www.friendlyatheist.com/p/christian-...
Even if you are charitable and assume that everyone double-counts Catholics as Christians, that’s still adding up to 130%.
This actually explains something about how people talk about the Jewish community.
100%. And when you’re doing the groceries, put your cart back.
saw a whole group of able-bodied adults that made it through the TSA line just standing & watching as all of the empty containers piled up on the belt. If you’re out there traveling today, be a part of the solution, not part of the problem.
#OTD - On this day in 1936, the Canadian National Vimy Memorial was inaugurated. The memorial will appear on the new vertical $20 bank note early next year as a tribute to Canada’s contributions and sacrifices in military conflicts throughout its history. https://bit.ly/4fvp7Xg
Shana, they bought their tickets. They knew what they were getting into. I say…let them crash!
Funny this would pop up as I’m sitting here in Gimli….
On July 23, 1983, Air Canada Flight 143 took off from Montreal on a flight to Edmonton. Halfway through the flight, while at 41,000 feet, the Boeing 767 ran out of fuel, forcing a landing at a racetrack in Manitoba. This is the Gimli Glider story. 📸 Wayne Glowacki 🧵1/20
I think I picked a really good time to be on vacation. Have a viking.
Listen, Betty, don't start up with your white zone shit again.

Americans are now so used to their president cheating and breaking rules that many of them seem genuinely not to understand why the world was rooting for Belgium.

Oh, man. Because of Ottawa's extreme weather yesterday, Cornerstone Housing for Women suffered a flood. It's taking major resources, human and financial, to deal with the damage and keep women housed. They're asking folks to donate, if they can:
