I've just added this to my SEF: There are no trends for SEND data across the school, as the range and complexities of needs is so varied that the data in yearly or school context is almost meaningless. I feel strongly about this. Drawing conclusions from SEND data is deeply flawed.

Davyhulme Primary School: New Partner School Story
The changes we have seen since developing relational practice have been incredible – it is how we all want to be treated, and staff are invigorated to continue our journey. Before we introduced relational practice, the school followed a traditional behaviour policy which used rewards and sanctions. Punishments were given as consequences. The previous Headteacher was very strict, traditional and would frequently shout at pupils and punish them for their behaviour. Behaviour was good overall, but i

Relational Relationships
The other evening, I was being interviewed for someone’s doctoral research, a hugely important area: Values-based Leadership. He asked some great questions which caused me to reflect in depth about some of the times when I have been fortunate to be a values-based leader in education. For some of his questions, I didn’t have a ready reply and had to think before answering. How about this great question: Q: How did being a values-led leader help to create trust between you and your colleagues

The schools that are most effective in providing inclusive provision will be grounded in excellent classroom practices. Slogans, pithy sayings and meaningless vision statements will not provide the education these children need. Schools have to start inclusion with the child.

"We have seen a significant reduction in suspensions...”
When relationships are prioritised, behaviour becomes something we understand and support, rather than simply manage. The impact is profound: calmer classrooms, increased engagement, improved staff wellbeing and stronger partnerships with families. By fostering trust, consistency and belonging, schools create the conditions where positive behaviour flourishes.

Picking up your own tab
Sending a poorly behaved child out of class to be "chewed out" by a non-relational deputy head might feel like the right thing to do in the moment, but behaviour support is counter-intuitive. The emotional pull to seek an instant consequence higher up the chain is real, but doing so actually works against what you are trying to achieve. Of course we want the boss to help. Agreeing what that help will look like is so important.
